The keel for Algoma Intrepid was laid in late 2016 as the Algoma Endurance, being launched on June 8, 2017. Algoma Central cancelled the construction contract for the Intrepid and three other 740′ Equinox Class ships, due to delays and the shipyard experiencing financial difficulties. The contract for the Intrepid was renewed on September 4, 2019, also when her hull name was changed from Algoma Endurance to Algoma Intrepid. Algoma Intrepid is 650’09” long, 78′ wide, 44’07” deep, with a capacity of 25,054 tons. Her 14 cargo hatches feed 4 cargo holds, with a dual-hold belt system that feeds a forward loop belt and 266’01” boom. She is powered by a single Wartsila 5RT-flex50-D diesel engine, providing 6320 BHP. Algoma Intrepid was completed in early October 2020, and after passing sea trials, was delivered to Algoma.

She departed Croatia on October 7, 2020, on her way home to the Great Lakes, arriving at Montreal on November 10, 2020. She soon transited the Welland Canal to unload her ballast cargo and proceeded to Goderich, ON, to load her first official cargo.

The Algoma Intrepid is engaged in the stone, grain, and salt trades on the Great Lakes and Seaway system.
