About that same time the Army Corps tug Cheraw arrived with some hopper barges for the Gateway Metroport and slid past the Qamutik to reach the Southern end of the Main Dock. They spent some time shuffling around different locations inside the Lackawanna Canal between the East and West walls that morning. There was an area of the West side of the canal that had recently been cleared of debris so that barges could be loaded with stone for some seawall repairs to the South Pier in Buffalo. A few hours later the salty Qamutik got underway from Gateway Metroport in Lackawanna. They departed the South Entrance around 6:15AM and passed the inbound Karen Andrie – Endeavor tug-barge unit out near the Safe Water Beacon. The Qamutik headed for the Welland Canal and the Andrie came in the North Entrance for the Black Rock Canal. They were carrying a load of asphalt from the BP Whiting refinery near Chicago for Suite Kote in Tonawanda. The Andrie arrived off the dock around 9:20AM, winded, and secured for unloading shortly after.
