Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
The 740-foot self-unloader Algoma Intrepid arrived with salt from Goderich for the Gateway Metroport Main Dock on the morning of June 8th at 9AM. She came straight in and began unloading onto the bulk salt apron at the North end of the Lackawanna Canal. Later that morning the tug Cheraw got to work with her barges of stone and the derrick boat. They came out of the canal past the Intrepid, got set up in the Outer Harbor Southern Channel, and then spent the day running back and forth to the West Breakwater just outside the North Entrance. After the day’s job was done the Cheraw returned to Gateway Metroport and secured at the extreme South end of the Main Dock. Around 4PMthe Intrepid was done discharging salt and backed out for the Outer Harbor. She winded off the CRH cement terminal and departed via the South Entrance, bound for Goderich to load more salt.

The 680-foot John J Boland made a rare trip up the City Ship Canal to the Canadian Silica landing with a load of sand from Brevort, MI on June 9th. She cane in unassisted around 8PM and slowly made her way to the unloading apron on the North side of the drier building. They were done on June 10th by 3PM and backing out for the lake when the 664-foot self-unloader Manitoulin arrived for the ADM Standard elevator. The Manitoulin went to anchor out near the Safe Water Beacon and waited for the Boland to clear. The Boland sped up the process by backing all the way out past the buoys so that the Manitoulin could come in quicker and not wait for them to wind. Both ships passed each other out in the lake with the Boland winding out in the open water and the Manitoulin coming inside the wall to meet her tug. The Vermont helped the wind in the Outer Harbor and then towed the big grain boat all the way up to ADM.
