Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
CSL Niagara was done with her coal loading and departed Gateway bound for Hamilton around 4:15PM on the 18th. As they were headed out for the lake, the US Air Force C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft showed up to do their pre-airshow practice. The big 4 engine jet came in low over Buffalo Harbor and made a bunch of passes at only 1,200-feet. When they were making the turns at the South end of the breakwall, the aircraft was directly over the CSL Niagara four or five times as she came out from Lackawanna. Out in the lake, the crew of the Algoma Sault had an excellent view of the whole thing because they had been at anchor about 8 miles from Buffalo for a couple hours waiting for the CSL Niagara to depart. Around 4:30PM the Sault raised the anchors and headed in just as the C-17 finished their practice runs and buzzed them on the way back to the Niagara Falls base. The CSL Niagara and the Sault passed “on the one whistle” out near the Safe Water Beacon and went their separate ways. The Sault then came in the South Entrance, winded in the Outer Harbor, and backed up the Lackawanna Canal. By that time the C-17 had landed and a P-51 Mustang warbird had arrived, zooming all over the sky as the big self-unloader tied up at Gateway Metroport.
