Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
The 680-foot self-unloader Algoma Compass arrived around 2AM on the 26th with a load of salt. She came in the South Entrance, winded in the Outer Harbor, and backed up to the Lackawanna Canal for the Compass Minerals salt dome to unload part of her cargo. Later that morning she shifted ahead to the bulk apron at the North end of the Gateway Metroport Main Dock. She was finished unloading on the bulk apron and departed for Goderich around 1PM onto a hot and hazy Lake Erie.
The 100-foot tug Northstar Challenger spent a few days at the Erie Basin during the period of August 26th to the 29th. They were passing through on their way down the lakes and came to Buffalo to change crews over that weekend. The Challenger had previously done some survey work on Lake Superior earlier during the Summer.
NACC Capri was the last visitor for August. She departed the Welland Canal with a split load of cement from Oswego on the evening of the 29th and ended up in the Port Colborne Anchorage for some unknown reason, possibly waiting for a harbor pilot. Finally, at 5AM on the 31st, she got underway for Buffalo, met the tug Vermont at the North Entrance, and was towed up the Buffalo River stern first for LaFarge. She only spent a few hours unloading the last of her cargo and then departed with the Vermont checking her stern swing around 2PM. The tug was released in the Watson Basin and the Capri then headed up to Bath to take on a full load this time for Buffalo for delivery in early September on a quick turn-around. I’ll cover that trip in the next report.
