Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
H. Lee White arrived with a load of wheat from Duluth for General Mills at 3PM on the 13th, just ahead of an oncoming lake squall. She went upriver without tugs and secured at the Frontier elevator to being unloading just as a line of thunderstorms blew into town. They endured two days of on and off rain delays and finally headed out for the lake stern first at 4:45PM on the 15th without tug assistance. She backed into the Outer Harbor Northern Channel, winded, and departed for Sandusky shortly after. Out near Point Abino, the White passed the inbound Canadian Coast Guard Cutter Limnos that was doing some survey work.
The 16th of September was a busy day in the harbor. Defiance – Ashtabula came in with a load of sand from Brevort for Canadian Silica at 8:30AM and was towed up to the plant by the Vermont. Vermont was back on hand to tow NACC Capri in at 10:15AM for LaFarge cement. They went up stern first after winding in the Outer Harbor. First out was Defiance – Ashtabula at 4PM, again assisted by the Vermont for a stern first tow down to the lake.
NACC Capri got underway from LaFarge at 8AM on the 17th with the Vermont along to check her stern. She departed Buffalo bound for Bath, clearing the Outer Harbor piers about 45 minutes later.
CSL Niagara arrived light from Nanticoke at 12:30PM on the 20th to load some coal at Gateway Metroport. She came in the South Entrance, winded in the Outer Harbor, and backed in by herself for the bulk apron about halfway down the east side of the slip.
The tug-barge combo New York – DS509A arrived with asphalt from Detroit at 9:30PM on the 20th. They switched their towing gear around from pull to push mode outside the breakwalls and then came in the North Entrance. After clearing the piers, the New York took her barge south and they dropped the hooks in the Outer Harbor Special Anchorage Area between the Port Terminal and the Bell Slip for the night. This was the first time in about 10 years that a commercial vessel used the anchorage out there since Andrie had the contract back then. Around 6:30AM they pulled up the hooks and headed for the Black Rock Lock. The tug Vermont helped them make the dock at Marathon and the barge spent about a day unloading there. Later that afternoon, the CSL Niagara departed Gateway Metroport with her load of coal around 5:30PM bound for Nanticoke.
