Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
The Articulated Tug-Barge combo Victory-Maumee arrived on only their second trip ever for General Mills with wheat from Superior, WI on the 14th at 3PM. They came up the Buffalo River, turned to Port in the Watson Basin, and headed into the City Ship Canal without assistance for the Frontier Elevator. There was a little bit of confusion among the deck gang about the move as they came alongside the building because the barge has to touch up, land their crew, swing out the boom, and then move ahead. The Captain got the crew straightened out on exactly which elevator they were headed for, where the receiving hopper was, and what to do on the dock with the boat over the radio. After easing in slow, they were then able to get everyone over the side OK and set up for unloading without any problems. Rain delays with the cargo discharge kept them there about 12 hours longer than expected and they finally departed at 9AM on the 16th with the tug Vermont at the stern. It was a slow, stern first tow down to the lake in a pouring rain storm but everything went fine and the big ATB dropped their tow line off Lighthouse Point as they backed out. Once in the Outer Harbor, the Vermont stayed alongside but did not assist as theVictory’s Captain used his barge’s bow thruster to wind her. Once underway for the North Entrance, he said that their next trip here would be for winter layup in a few months time. After they cleared the breakwall he called Seaway Long Point and told them that the barge was in ballast, drawing 21-feet 6-inches and that the destination was Toledo, OH. At a combined length of 815-feet, the Victory-Maumee is the longest vessel of all times in the Buffalo River or the City Ship Canal.
