Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
Next up was the NACC Argonaut on the sunny but cold morning Nov. 5. She arrived from Port Colborne around 8:45AM and was met by the tug Vermont at the North Entrance for the stern first tow up to LaFarge. They were done unloading at 2PM on the 6th and departed with the Vermont at the stern. She dropped her tug at Michigan St. and started to speed up a little bit as they headed out from there alone. Interestingly enough, I was aboard the USS Little Rock at the Naval Park doing some work down in the old gun plot room near the bottom of the ship at the time and had no idea they were coming by. Around 2:25PM I started to hear noise in the room coming from the port side of the Little Rock’s hull. It took me a minute to figure it out, but what I was hearing down there was the bow thruster rumbling and the prop wash of the Argonaut as they moved through the Watson Basin, right past me. That was really neat to hear from inside a ship 15 feet below the surface and it sounded like something out of an old WWII movie. Later that afternoon, the CSL Laurentian came in from Sandusky to load the second half of a split load of coal. She came in the South Entrance, winded in the Outer Harbor, and backed in for the bulk unloading apron at the Gateway Metroport Main Dock. They were done on the morning of the 7th and got underway for Hamilton at 5:32AM.
