A significant low pressure system situated north of Lake Superior is causing gale and storm force winds on all the upper lakes. Most vessels have sought shelter and gone to anchor to wait out the weather.
Lake Michigan: Joseph L Block for Two Harbors is anchored off of the north shore of Washington Island..
Lake Huron: Algoma Harvester for Thunder Bay, CSL Assiniboine for Silver Bay and the saltie Sunda for Goderich are in the Sarnia anchorage. Manitowoc is anchored in North Bay off of Presque Isle. Dorothy Ann / Pathfinder for Burns Harbor are in the Calcite anchorage. Karen Andre and her barge for Detroit and Samuel De Champlain / Innovation for Milwaukee are anchored in the South Channel off of Grandview MI. Algoma Buffalo had finished loading in Meldrum Bay and went to anchor north of Cockburn Island.
In the lower St Marys River G3 Marquis for Port Cartier, Paul R Tregurtha for Duluth Superior anre anchored north of Detour. Lee A Tregurtha is anchored off of Sterling Bay, St Joseph Island. Whitefish Bay for Thunder Bay and Victory / Maumee for Toledo are anchored south of Lime Island.
Lake Superior: Stewart J Cort for Burns Harbor is tied up to the west pier at the Soo locks.Two salties, Drawsko and Floragracht both for overseas ports are anchored off of Bay Mills. Rt Hon Paul J Martin for Quebec City, Edwin H Gott for Two Harbors and American Integrity for Gary are anchored on the west shore of Whitefish Bay. Kaye E Barker for Marquette is anchored in Goulais Bay. American Mariner for Thunder Bay is off of Marquette Harbor. Great Republic is off of Baraga MI and Captain Henry Jackman is anchored in Keweenaw Bay. Frontenac for Port Colborne is anchored in Thunder Bay.
Duluth-Superior – Scott Bjorklund
Duluth Entry: James R. Barker arrived at 23:15 (CST) Wednesday night to load low sulfur coal at SMET. As of Thursday night, Mesabi Miner was loading at CN#6. Due to stormy weather conditions, Mesabi Miner and James R. Barker have unknown departure estimates.
Superior Entry: No vessel traffic has taken place since the last report. As of Thursday night, Indiana Harbor was loading at BNSF, Maria G. was loading at CHS#1, and James R. Barker was loading at SMET. Indiana Harbor has an unknown departure estimate due to stormy weather conditions.
Two Harbors-Silver Bay – Gary A. Putney
Walter J. McCarthy Jr. arrived Two Harbors on 12/16 at 02:36. As of 18:00 on 12/16 she is still at dock. Due Two Harbors are the Great Republic that is at anchor between Baraga and L’Anse. The Edwin H. Gott is anchored in Whitefish South of the Pt. Both anchorage reports are as of 18:00 on 12/16. Northshore Mining in Silver Bay saw the arrival of the Joyce L. VanEnkevort/Great Lakes Trader on 12/16 at 02:52.

Tuesday; 22:36 G 3 Marquis departed for Port Cartier.Wednesday; 0:27 Frontenac arrived at Viterra A to load grain. 9:46 Tim S Dool arrived at the G3 elevator to load grain. 13:38 Federal Ruhr finished unloading at Keefer Terminal and shifted to Thunder Bay Terminals to load potash. Wednesday; 18:02 The saltie Tundra finished loading and shifted to the main anchorage. 20:18 Frontenac finished loading at Viterra A and went to anchor for weather. CSL Welland arrived at Viterra A to load grain. Thursday; 9:29 Tundra departed for Montreal and is sailing along the west shore towards Duluth.
St. Marys River – Roger LeLievre
The only vessels moving in the system Thursday were the upbound Edwin H. Gott in the morning and the downbound Edgar B. Speer in the early evening. Stewart J. Cort spent Thursday moored at the southwest pier of the Soo Locks.
Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
Marblehead: Olive L. Moore/Menominee arrived from Cleveland at 06:01. Herbert C. Jackson was a late Thursday night arrival and went to anchor.
Sandusky: Michipicoten is anchored off of Sandusky. Sam Laud arrived late Thursday night to load at Norfolk Southern.
Cleveland: Canfornav’s Chestnut arrived Wednesday night and went to dock 24W at the Port. She will be the last ship of the season there. NACC Argonaut arrived at LaFarge at 03:43. Olive L. Moore/Menominee departed for Marblehead at 04:35. American Spirit departed for Duluth at 06:28. Sam Laud arrived from Calcite to unload at Ontario Stone. She left for Sandusky. Peyton Lynn C and Federal Dart are still at the Port.
Fairport Harbor: H. Lee White arrived at 12:30 to unload at Osborne.
Conneaut: John G. Munson unloaded at the P&C dock and departed at 09:39.
Erie: Minervagracht left for Valleyfield.
Nanticoke: Algoma Hansa and Harvest Spirit are at anchor as is the saltie Lake Erie.
