Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
Inbound for UTAC pellets, James R. Barker made her way under the Aerial Lift Bridge at 01:19 with a late-night salute as she proceeded to CN Dock 6 in West Duluth. Dirk S. VanEnkevort/Michigan Trader departed Superior at 11:13 from BNSF Dock 5; they will likely be headed to Toledo with Hibtac pellets. After an unusually fast load for a footer at CN, the Barker departed at 15:26 with another massive Barker Bark for onlookers at the Duluth Ship Canal. She is due next at Cleveland-Cliffs in Indiana Harbor. USCGC Spar returned to Duluth at 18:55 after conducting spring aids to navigation operations in Lake Superior. Following a quick stay at the DECC to pick up more buoys, the cutter and her crew were outbound at 22:21 to resume work in the lake.
Two Harbors, MN – Silver Bay, MN – Gary Putney
Mesabi Miner departed Two Harbors on Saturday at 05:45 for Indiana Harbor. At 19:00, Edgar B. Speer is north of Outer Island due in Two Harbors late Saturday night. Due in port on Sunday are Presque Isle and Walter J. McCarthy Jr.
Thunder Bay, ON – Anonymous
At 17:40 Friday, saltie Sunda arrived at the Superior Elevator to load grain. CSL St-Laurent arrived at Viterra A the next morning to load, and Captain Henry Jackman followed her inbound for the G3 terminal to load grain.
Northern Lake Michigan Ports – Anonymous
Port Inland, MI: Arthur M. Anderson arrived at 04:14 Saturday to load limestone.
Southern Lake Michigan Ports – Joshua Hebeisen
Calumet Harbor, IL: Samuel de Champlain/Innovation were inbound the Calumet River at 22:36 and proceeded to the Lafarge terminal to unload cement from Alpena. Farther up the river, Federal Churchill cast off from the Iroquois Landing Lakefront Terminus about an hour later to anchor off Burns Harbor.
Indiana Harbor, IN: Joseph L. Block remained at Mittal West, likely loading excess Cleveland-Cliffs taconite pellets for transfer elsewhere.
Buffington, IN: American Mariner departed at 07:41 for Port Inland.
Burns Harbor, IN: After shifting to the northern end of the Cleveland-Cliffs dock overnight, Undaunted/Pere Marquette 41 departed at 08:09 for Grand Haven. Hudsongracht departed at 21:26 for Cleveland, and Vlieborg followed her outbound at 23:22 for Duluth-Superior. Both salties had been tied up at Federal Marine Terminals. Wilfred Sykes arrived just before midnight for Metro Ports, likely unloading limestone from Calcite at the Carmeuse Lime facility.
Northern Lake Huron Ports – Anonymous
Alpena, MI: Herbert C. Jackson arrived the Lafarge cement plant at 23:37 Friday to unload; she was outbound for Calcite at 11:41 the next morning.
Stoneport, MI: Calumet departed at 22:59 Friday for Monroe. Hon. James L. Oberstar arrived Saturday morning at 10:31 to load limestone.
Calcite, MI: Wilfred Sykes finished loading limestone for Burns Harbor on Friday at 20:10 and set off down Lake Michigan. Herbert C. Jackson arrived Saturday at 14:40 to load limestone.
Port Dolomite, MI: Great Republic arrived to load limestone at 07:03.
Bruce Mines, ON: At 19:51 Friday evening, Michipicoten finished loading trap rock and departed for Goderich.
Meldrum Bay, ON: Algoma Innovator arrived at the Lafarge quarry 13:28 Saturday to load limestone.
Saginaw River, MI – Todd Shorkey
Algoma Intrepid was inbound on the Saginaw River Saturday afternoon headed for the Wirt Essexville Fertilizer Terminal to unload. She finished discharging, turned around and was back outbound for the lake by 18:30. Alpena was also a Saturday afternoon arrival, making her first delivery of the season to the Holcim Cement Dock in Essexville. Remaining on the Saginaw River at the Consumers Energy Dock, after unloading there on Friday, was Paul R. Tregurtha.
Goderich, ON – Bruce Douglas
Algoma Sault cleared 11:14 Friday morning upbound for Chicago with salt. This will be the Sault’s fifth journey from Goderich Chicago this season. John D. Leitch loaded at Compass Minerals and cleared 02:09 early Saturday; she was also headed for Chicago with salt. Saltie Greenwing remains at the elevators. Michipicoten arrived at 10:09 Saturday to unload trap rock at the new wharf.
Detroit, MI – Windsor, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Zug Island saw the arrival of Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader shortly before 07:00. The tug/barge combo tied up along the southern end of the facility at the entrance to the River Rouge, potentially to unload a coal or aggregate cargo picked up in Toledo. Defiance/Ashtabula arrived at 9:51 to wait for John J. Boland to finish at Mistersky; after the latter departed for Port Gypsum at noon, Defiance guided her barge forward to the fueling station. Manitowoc, another Mistesrky customer, was inbound the Detroit River 16:15. She took the spot at the dock recently vacated by Defiance/Ashtabula as the pair set off for the Buffalo area. On the Windsor side of the river, Rodopi arrived at 17:15 to wait for Florence Spirit to finish loading at ADM, and Baie Comeau docked at Windsor Salt at 18:20. Manitowoc would leave Mistersky at around 18:30 for Green Bay, and Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader rounded out the day’s traffic by departing for Bruce Mines at 21:15.
Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
Monroe, MI: Arrivals were Karen Andrie/Endeavor at 19:45 and Calumet at 20:47. Calumet went to anchor in Lake Erie.
Toledo, OH: Arrivals were Manitowoc at 01:34 and Whistler at 05:02. Departures were Edwin H. Gott for Two Harbors and Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader for Bruce Mines.
Cleveland, OH: Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder arrived at 20:11; McKeil Spirit was a late night arrival to unload at Lehigh Cement. NACC Capri is still at anchor, while Peyton Lynn C and fleetmates Federal Baltic and Federal Fraser remain at the Port of Cleveland docks.
Nanticoke, ON: Algonorth and Frontenac departed for Sorel-Tracy and Thunder Bay, respectively. Federal Sakura is at Stelco and Algocanada is now at anchor.
Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
Canadian Coast Guard buoy tender Caribou Isle arrived from the Welland Canal to service the Niagara River markers on the Canadian side of the harbor around 15:00 on Saturday. She worked from the lake to Peace Bridge in the afternoon hours before heading back to the canal. In the meantime, G-tug Vermont conducted an inspection mission off the Canadian Silica Landing. She was likely monitoring work being done along the City Ship Canal where the landslide occurred or using her depth finder to check the channel, making three slow passes and before returning to the dock around 17:00.
Port Colborne, ON – Roger LeLievre
Scrapping of the St. Clair is progressing quickly. Air-filled bladders lifted the fire-damaged hull so it could be dragged ashore to allow easier access.
Hamilton, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Hamilton would only see outbound traffic on Saturday, starting with fleetmates CSL Niagara and CSL Assiniboine leaving empty at 01:25 and 03:06, respectively. The vessels, both due next in Duluth-Superior, had spent the previous day unloading coal and gypsum in port. Harvest Spirit was outbound next at 10:55 after discharging petroleum coke to ArcelorMittal, and Algoma Conveyor departed later in the evening with her holds empty of grain unloaded at P&H. Another pair of vessels headed for the same destination, the Spirit and Conveyor are both bound for Nanticoke. The departures still leave six vessels in port: Federal Mayumi loading grain at P&H, Algoma Guardian discharging steel slabs at Federal Marine Terminals 12 East, Federal Beaufort across from her unloading steel at 14 West, Tundra transfering urea to shore at Agrico, Kaministiqua taking on grain at Richardson, and Shoveler waiting at anchor in the inner harbor with fertilizer.
Seaway – René Beauchamp
Ocean Navigator, ex-Victory I, arrived in Montreal this morning as the port’s first cruise ship of the year. She is expected to depart tonight for Toronto and Chicago.
