Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
The Twin Ports were buzzing with vessel traffic in the harbor on Monday, May 23, beginning with VanEnkevort’s tug/barge combo Joyce L. VanEnkevort/Great Lakes Trader arriving Duluth with limestone for Graymont at 03:06. The Joyce detached from the Trader shortly after tying up, leaving her barge to unload while she headed over to refuel at Calumet at the Duluth Port Terminal. The pair would later be reunited mid-morning. At 04:00, Frontenac finished loading Keetac pellets at BNSF 5 and was outbound the Superior Entry for Nanticoke. Algoma Strongfield arrived from anchorage to take her place at the dock 04:31. Also weighing anchor was H. Lee White, who proceeded inbound on the Duluth side of the harbor at 07:04 in preparation to load petroleum coke at Midwest Energy. Kiyi departed Duluth shortly after to survey fish populations in the western end of Lake Superior. Throughout the course of the day, the research vessel made her way down Minnesota Point to Superior and up the southern shore of the lake to Port Wing before setting a course back for the Twin Ports. American Century departed via the Duluth Entry at 10:06 with 68,000 tons of coal for St. Clair, clearing the way for H. Lee White to tie up at Midwest Energy. Joyce L. VanEnkevort pushed her empty barge outbound Duluth for Silver Bay at 14:07, and H. Lee White followed the pair outbound three hours later heading on a rare trip to Thorold on the Welland Canal. Kiyi returned from her survey at 17:36 and docked at the DECC once again. Traffic in Duluth wrapped up at 18:12 with the arrival of John G. Munson. Loaded with stone, the laker made her way to CN-Hallett 5 in West Duluth to unload, after which she will shift over to CN 6 to load ore. In Superior, Algoma Strongfield departed for Hamilton with Hibtac pellets at 18:32. Federal Ruhr remains unloading cement at Ash Grove, while Exeborg is just across the bay taking on beet pulp pellets at Gavilon. USS Minneapolis-St. Paul is still docked at Berth 9 of the Port Terminal with an undisclosed departure date.

Southern Lake Michigan Ports – Joshua Hebeisen
Calumet Harbor, IL: Baie Comeau departed 02:18 Monday, May 23 from Morton Salt and did a loop in the lake before proceeding to anchor outside the South Chicago area. Caroline McKee/Commander arrived for St. Marys at 16:14, and Juno departed Iroquois Lakehead at 18:48 for Sarnia. Samuel de Champlain/Innovation remain discharging cement products downriver at Lafarge.
Indiana Harbor, IN: Indiana Harbor saw a pair of arrivals for the old Mittal West dock Monday, with fleetmates Wilfred Sykes and Joseph L. Block tying up at the eastern and western ends of the facility at 03:51 and 16:34, respectively. American Integrity is at Dock 7H discharging taconite pellets.
Gary, IN: Indiana Harbor departed May 23 for Two Harbors after unloading ore at the Gary Works hopper. Arthur M. Anderson started to arrive the slip at 13:30, but backed out 25 minutes later and waited for fleetmate Edgar B. Speer to make her way inbound at 14:40. The Anderson finally arrived at 15:06. Both vessels are discharging Minntac pellets from Lake Superior ports, with the Speer at the hopper and the Anderson at the north end of the dock.
Burns Harbor, IN: Federal Marine Terminals saw the arrival of Federal St. Laurent at 01:27. Her fleetmate Federal Fraser was inbound for Metro Ports directly across the pier at 05:58. Departing for Indiana Harbor on the shuttle runs from Cleveland-Cliffs was Wilfred Sykes.
Detroit, MI – Capt. Mike Nicholls
The tug Seahound arrived from Port Dover Thursday, May 19 to substitute for the tug Stormont, which departed for Hamilton for her five-year-inspection.
Detroit, MI – Windsor, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Edwin H. Gott was outbound the Detroit River just after midnight on May 23 following a stop for fuel at Mistersky. Herbert C. Jackson was also an early-morning departure at 02:22 after sailing down the River Rouge from Dearborn; she is due next in Presque Isle. Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder and Alpena were the next pair of vessel traffic, arriving at 06:51 and 07:17 for Motor City Materials and Lafarge, respectively. Algoma Niagara cast off from Zug Island and headed downbound for Port Cartier at around 11:45. Dorothy Ann guided Pathfinder outbound the River Rouge after noon, and the pair set sail for Marblehead at 12:57. Waiting for her turn to navigate the Rouge was CSL Tadoussac, who arrived at St. Marys just after 13:00. Alpena shifted to Mistersky at 17:00 before departing for Toledo at 18:42, and James R. Barker was next at the dock for fuel from 19:30 to 22:44 on her way back up to Duluth-Superior.
Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
Monroe, MI: James R. Barker arrived at 07:04 on Monday, May 23 to unload coal at DTE. She left for Duluth at 15:40. New York/Double Skin 509A are unloading petroleum products.
Toledo, OH: Arrivals were Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader and Alpena. Departures were Victory/Maumee and Florence Spirit. In port are Algoma Transport and Federal Bering.
Kingsville, ON: Cuyahoga arrived at 02:10, unloaded at Southwestern Sales and departed for Marblehead at 05:55. She arrived back at 18:29.
Marblehead, OH: Cuyahoga arrived at 09:15. She loaded stone at Holcim and left at 14:42 for a return to Kingsville. Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder arrived at 20:27 and anchored.
Sandusky, OH: CSL Niagara arrived at 09:50 to load coal at Norfolk Southern.
Cleveland, OH: NACC Argonaut docked at Holcim late.
Fairport Harbor, OH: Manitowoc arrived at 01:04. The grounded American Courage will lighten into Manitowoc. G-tugs Ohio and Pennsylvania are assisting.
Ashtabula, OH: Manitowoc left Sunday night for Fairport Harbor.
Nanticoke, ON: Algocanada is at Imperial Oil.
Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
Defiance/Ashtabula suffered a weather-related delay on Sunday, May 22 and sat at the Gateway Main Dock most of the day without unloading. Around 16:00, the conditions cleared up enough to get going, and Ashtabula began unloading her sand. They were all set by the next morning, and Defiance got underway with her big barge at 06:34. The pair headed right out the south entrance and up the lake while the saltie Josef was wrapping up back at Gateway. Around 08:45, the tug Vermont came down from Buffalo to assist them out with a line at the stern. After clearing the Lackawanna Canal, the tug helped her wind in the outer harbor, and Josef headed out the south entrance bound for Montreal. Later that afternoon around 13:00, NACC Capri arrived for Holcim cement and was towed in stern-first by Vermont.
Hamilton, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Algoma Central’s Captain Henry Jackman arrived with ore for ArcelorMittal Dofasco at 02:18, where she joined fleetmate John D. Leitch at the dock. Everlast/Norman McLeod departed for Detroit at 06:07 after unloading asphalt, and saltie Lyulin tied up at P&H at 7:20 to load grain after sitting at anchor. At 13:31, the Leitch departed empty for Goderich after unloading coal. Algoma Intrepid arrived with sand for Lakeshore at 14:05, Vectis Pride was inbound an hour later with steel for Federal Marine Terminals 14 West, and CCGC Griffon departed for Quinte Bay at 17:44. Edenborg, Harbour Progress, Maria G, and Federal Hunter remain waiting at anchor, while Federal Alster is still loading grain at Richardson.
