Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
After unloading limestone at Graymont, American Mariner departed Duluth at 02:13 heading up the lake for Two Harbors. Arriving from Two Harbors four hours later with stone was the versatile Great Republic, who proceeded to the C. Reiss dock in West Duluth to unload. James R. Barker was inbound minutes later at 06:17 to load coal at the Superior Midwest Energy Terminal, unleashing an expectedly awesome salute as she entered the canal. At 13:10, 1,004-foot Edgar B. Speer made her first trip to the Twin Ports of the 2022 season when she arrived Duluth for fuel at Calumet. She had paid nine visits to Lake Superior since March, all of which saw her load taconite at the CN ore docks in Two Harbors. The Speer was due at the Duluth CN facility on this trip, and made her way to the shiploader at Dock 6 late afternoon. Her fleetmate Great Republic sailed up the St. Louis River and tied up at the gravity feed portion of the dock shortly thereafter. James R. Barker departed with a split load of coal for St. Clair and Monroe at 18:02, and ASC’s American Integrity was inbound on the Superior side of the harbor at 19:38 for BNSF. The footer will be taking on 63,000 tons of Keetac pellets overnight destined for Gary. General cargo vessel Nunalik remains at Berth 1 at the Duluth Port Terminal discharging wind turbine parts ashore. Federal Ruhr is across the terminal at Ash Grove unloading cement powder, and is currently expected to depart Saturday evening. At anchor off the Duluth Entry is Federal Seto, expected to arrive on the evening of May 30 to load grain at CHS 1.  Good news for boatnerds came across the harbor as the historic Lee A. Tregurtha, sitting idled at Fraser Shipyards since January, turned on her AIS. She is scheduled to depart for Marquette on June 1.

Two Harbors, MN – Silver Bay, MN – Gary Putney
CSL Assiniboine arrived Two Harbors on Thursday, May 26 at 02:47 and departed at 16:12 for Quebec City. Arriving Two Harbors on the 26th at 00:36 with an assist from Heritage Marine’s Nels J. was the Great Republic and went to north of #2. She departed at 03:47 for Duluth. American Mariner went to anchor off Two Harbors at 04:00 to await the shiploader. Indiana Harbor arrived Two Harbors for lay-by at north of #2 at 06:50. She then shifted to south of #2 between 16:45-17:30. Due Two Harbors on May 27 is Michipicoten, and due Cliffs Northshore in Silver Bay are Dirk S. VanEnkevort/Michigan Trader.

Marquette, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Marquette frequenters Victory/Maumee arrived at 01:19 for the south side of LS&I, where they remained loading Tilden pellets as of Thursday evening.

St. Marys River – Roger LeLievre
The cruise ship Viking Octantis made her first visit to the northern Great Lakes Thursday headed for Thunder Bay, ON. Her passage was shrouded by fog and rain, but that didn’t prevent her from blowing a salute to boatwatchers gathered at Mission Point.

Calcite, MI – Roger LeLievre
Loaded with stone, Wilfred Sykes departed for Cliffs Cleveland – a first for the vessel – at 15:01. 

Southern Lake Michigan Ports – Joshua Hebeisen
Calumet Harbor, IL: Polsteam’s Drawsko remains at Iroquois Lakehead.
Indiana Harbor, IN: Joseph L. Block departed for Burns Harbor at 13:57 after spending several days at the former Mittal West facility, with Baie Comeau following her outbound two hours later headed for Sept Iles. The latter had been loading at Dock 7H.
Burns Harbor, IN: The lone vessel traffic was the 16:23 arrival of Joseph L. Block, who tied up at Cleveland-Cliffs with what was likely ore from Indiana Harbor.

Detroit, MI – Windsor, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Mistersky saw its first and only customer of the day shortly after midnight when H. Lee White arrived to refuel. The river-class vessel got underway for Thorold at 02:58 with petroleum coke from Superior on what will be a rare visit to the Welland Canal. Interlake’s Herbert C. Jackson bid farewell to Zug Island at 03:54, and cruise ship Ocean Explorer arrived at 07:13 for the Public Dock and Terminal. Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder stopped at 13:42 for a delay at Nicholson before continuing on their upbound journey to Milwaukee at 18:20. Ocean Explorer departed at 22:58 after her passengers spent the day in downtown Detroit. Their next shoreside excursion will be in Cleveland on Friday. Across the Detroit River, Federal Bering remains loading at ADM Windsor.

Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
Toledo, OH: Arrivals were John J. Boland, Saginaw, and Joyce L. VanEnkevort/Great Lakes Trader. Departures were Prentiss Brown/St. Marys Challenger and John J. Boland.
Marblehead, OH: Herbert C. Jackson arrived at 11:33 to load stone at Holcim.
Sandusky, OH: CSL Niagara departed for Nanticoke. Florence Spirit arrived at 04:17, loaded coal at Norfolk Southern and left for Hamilton at 11:16.
Lorain, OH: Laura L. VanEnkevort/Joseph H. Thompson arrived at 12:44 and unloaded stone at Terminal Ready Mix.
Cleveland, OH: Ocean Navigator left late Wednesday night. Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder departed at 02:39 with salt for Milwaukee. Prentiss Brown/St. Marys Challenger arrived at 10:39 and went to the St. Marys Columbus St. terminal to unload. Karen Andrie/Endeavor arrived at 12:48. Prentiss Brown/St. Marys Challenger departed for Charlevoix.
Ashtabula, OH: Sam Laud arrived at 01:28 and went to anchor. She arrived at the Pinney dock at 13:22.
Nanticoke, ON: Algonova left for Halifax at 00:31. Algoma Hansa weighed anchor and went to Imperial Oil at 07:30. Presque Isle departed for Two Harbors at 02:18. Arriving at 06:37 was the Frontenac to unload ore at Stelco. CSL Niagara arrived at 11:17 and anchored off of Port Dover as the dock, as Stelco was occupied by Federal Clyde and Frontenac. Frontenac departed at 20:51 and CSL Niagara went to the dock to unload coal.

Hamilton, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Hamilton was treated to a Fednav two-fer early Thursday morning, with Federal Alster departing at 03:50 for Ireland and Federal Yoshina arriving 20 minutes later for grain at G3 Canada. Weighing anchor from the inner harbor, saltie Maria G took the Alster’s place loading grain at Richardson. Hinch Spirit was outbound at 13:05 after undergoing repairs at GLS; she is due next in Montreal. Lyulin departed at 22:52 with grain from P&H destined for Foynes, Ireland, and petite Wagenborg vessel Edenborg made the short trip to the dock from her spot at anchor. This leaves Harbour Progress and Federal Hunter alone on the hook. Vectis Pride is the only other vessel in port, unloading steel at Federal Marine Terminals.
