Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
The Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge rose to its full height of 135 feet in the wee hours of the morning to give passage to the departing Federal Seto. The Seto, clearing the canal at 01:32 with a cargo of wheat from CHS 1, is due next in Sorel to top off her load before heading overseas for Italy. About thirty minutes later, 1,000-foot Indiana Harbor made her entrance at the Superior piers to load 63,000 tons of Keetac pellets at BNSF 5. There was no further activity in the Twin Ports until noon, at which point Defiance/Ashtabula cast off from CN-Hallett Dock 5 empty after unloading their cargo of limestone. The pair made the short trip right across the bay to load 19,000 tons of petroleum coke at Midwest Energy. At 13:56, American Mariner departed Duluth with wheat from General Mills Superior. She gave three great salutes to the boatwatching faithful on the piers before setting off for Buffalo. With Ashtabula’s load nearing completion at Midwest Energy, Paul R. Tregurtha left her early-evening anchorage off the piers and arrived Duluth at 18:48 in anticipation of her turn at the dock. Defiance eventually pushed her barge outbound beneath the Aerial Lift Bridge at 20:51 for Alpena. In Superior, Indiana Harbor departed for Gary at 19:22. Lee A. Tregurtha is at Fraser Shipyards preparing to begin her 2022 season with a trip to Marquette. Friday was her tentative departure date, but the WWII veteran remains at the dock as of midnight.
