Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
A pair of classic lakers made up the only activity in the Twin Ports on Monday, starting with Hon. James L. Oberstar departing Duluth at 03:10 en route to Marquette. She had been in port since Sunday discharging a split load of dolomite and limestone at CN-Hallett Dock 5. Also at Hallett was John G. Munson unloading limestone; she shifted over to the CN Dock 6 shiploader to load Minntac pellets around 09:30. The Munson would depart for Gary at 20:37. Other vessels handling cargo in the port included Burns Harbor loading ore at BNSF for her namesake port and Samuel de Champlain/Innovation delivering cement to Lafarge Superior. Lee A. Departing for the Twin Ports around midnight Monday morning was CSL’s Frontenac. She had been discharging aggregate cargo at the Lafarge dock in Windsor. As with all her visits to the westernmost end of Lake Superior so far this year, the classic Canadian laker is headed up empty for ore on the Wisconsin side of the harbor. American Spirit was also outbound for Lake Superior taconite at 04:57, though she will be making the trip en route to Marquette. The Spirit had been at Mistersky since late the night before fueling for the long journey. Interlake’s Herbert C. Jackson left the Detroit River two hours later after a stop at Zug Island for DTE EES Coke. Her destination is unclear, though recent trips suggest she is headed for Sandusky. Walter J. McCarthy Jr. arrived at 13:31 for Mistersky; training vessel State of Michigan departed at 14:15, likely with cadets, for Port Huron; and Saginaw left Levy on the River Rouge shortly thereafter with a Toledo destination. The McCarthy sailed upbound for Superior at 16:53. Arthur M. Anderson made a brief port of call to end the day’s traffic, stopping for U.S. Gypsum between 17:13 and 22:26 before heading back upbound for Calcite.
