Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
At long last, Walter J. McCarthy Jr. wrapped up a several days’ loading process at CN Dock 6 and departed Duluth for Cleveland at 08:20. The open berth allowed the Joseph L. Block to shift up from her moorings along the dock, getting in position to unload her aggregate cargo into the facility’s receiving hopper. The split load of limestone and dolomite in her holds will eventually find use as a flux in the pelletizing process at Minorca. Across state lines, Burns Harbor departed Superior with “the usual” – that is, 60,000 tons of Hibtac pellets destined for Burns Harbor – at 09:21, freeing up the dock for the anchored Michipictoen to proceed inbound and load less than 30 minutes later. Federal Mayumi cast off from SMET with 23,000 tons of petroleum coke mid-morning and was outbound the Duluth piers just after 11:00. In an unusual move, she proceeded to anchor off the entry near her fleetmate Federal Caribou. The pilot assisting the Mayumi on departure was then transferred to the Caribou, guiding the latter vessel inbound just over an hour later to load agricultural products at Gavilon. The same pilot would then be taxied back out to the Mayumi to begin the journey overseas to a cement production plant in Europe or North Africa. In the meantime, John J. Boland shifted from CN-Hallett Dock 5 to SMET where she too would load petroleum coke. Michipicoten departed Superior with a modest 17,500 tons of Keetac product for the Soo at 14:27; the Boland would depart Duluth at 18:52, destined for Alpena with 20,000 tons of coke. A pair of simultaneous evening arrivals at 19:30 would see the Great Republic and Indiana Harbor inbound the Duluth and Superior piers, respectively. The Republic is unloading limestone at Graymont, while the Harbor tied up at BNSF Dock 5 to take on a load of taconite pellets. Paul R. Tregurtha made port to load coal at 21:17 but made a rare arrival through the Superior Entry rather than Duluth. This maneuver was likely due to foggy conditions in the harbor once again on Tuesday night.

Marquette, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
A changing of the guard took place at the ore dock just before 02:30 Tuesday morning as Victory/Maumee arrived to take the south chutes and Lee A. Tregurtha departed those to the north.
