Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
At around 04:00, tug Joyce L. VanEnkevort pulled her mated barge Great Lakes Trader – filled with 35,000 tons of Hibtac pellets – out from BNSF Dock 5 and into Allouez Bay. The pair was soon outbound the Superior piers and on their way to Ironville, Toledo. About an hour later, James R. Barker was pulling into the dock where she, too, would load Hibtac. The only ship traffic under the Aerial Lift Bridge on Friday was Grand River Navigation’s John J. Boland, arriving at 22:18 with limestone from Port Inland. The Boland tied up at Graymont to unload, after which she is expected to shift over to SMET for a load of petroleum coke. Joseph H. Block began loading taconite pellets at CN Dock 6 after discharging her stone cargo into the receiving hopper. She appears to be using both the gravity dock and shiploader.
Marquette, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
American Spirit and Hon. James L. Oberstar departed with ore at 02:13 and 03:22 for Toledo and Detroit, respectively. The Spirit took on her load at the north side of the LS&I dock, with the Oberstar setting up shop to the south.
Port Inland, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Interlake beauty Kaye E. Barker arrived at 03:37 before departing down the lake for Grand Haven at 16:11.
Southern Lake Michigan Ports – Joshua Hebeisen
Calumet Harbor, IN: Caroline McKee/Commander were outbound for Charlevoix, as usual, after another of the pair’s trademark trips to the St. Marys Cement Chicago Terminal. Joining Máxima at Iroquois was fleetmate Beatrix at 05:53.
Indiana Harbor, IN: Rare Canadian visitor Algoma Niagara made her way into the harbor at 06:29, tying up at Dock 7H until her 19:38 departure. She is headed east on Lake Michigan for an unknown port. The much more common (and attractive) sight of classic steamer Wilfred Sykes in town could be had until she departed for Port Inland at 11:21.
Burns Harbor, IN: Saltie Edenborg continued her summer adventures around the Great Lakes when she departed for Thunder Bay at 20:44.
St. Joseph, MI – Benton Harbor, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Sam Laud squeezed her way up the St. Joseph River around 06:00 with limestone from Port Dolomite, which she would unload at the Central Dock for eventual use by Rieth-Riley Construction. The river-class vessel in her element backing out of St. Joseph just over seven hours later.
Northern Lake Huron Ports – Joshua Hebeisen
Bruce Mines, ON: Algoma Compass was outbound into the St. Joseph Channel by around 8:30 Friday morning, eventually reaching the main body of Lake Huron and continuing downbound for Goderich.
Meldrum Bay, ON: With the loading process complete soon after midnight, Saginaw left at around 01:00 bound for Lake Michigan and Muskegon.
Calcite, MI: Manitowoc departed for the Toledo area around noon, while American Mariner and Victory/Maumee arrived to load at 12:08 and 18:52, respectively.
Stoneport, MI: Departing for the River Rouge at 04:00 was the spiffy Herbert C. Jackson. Olive L. Moore/Menominee arrived sometime in the afternoon; her AIS signal was lost as she approached the port.
Goderich, ON – Bruce Douglas
Algoma Intrepid cleared 01.30 Friday upbound for Chicago with salt Algoma Innovator arrived 07.21 Friday loading at Compass Minerals. 13th appearance for Innovator this season. Algoma Compass expected next for salt. Goderich now hosted 80 Great Lake vessels this season.
Detroit, MI – Windsor, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
John G. Munson departed SRM Concrete at 03:42 on her way to a quick stop at Belle River and then the longer voyage to Port Dolomite. After shifting to Mistersky for fuel in the early-morning hours, Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder were also outbound, due next in Cleveland. Fellow tug/barge combo Samuel de Champlain/Innovation were 05:49 arrivals for the St. Marys plant and 16:38 departures for Toledo. Saltie Federal Beaufort and laker Lee A. Tregurtha both arrived around 09:00 for Nicholson and Dearborn, respectively, and tanker Iver Bright was inbound from Sarnia at 15:22 for a stop at Shell just up the Rouge.
Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
Monroe, MI: American Century departed for Toledo at 15:38. Paul R. Tregurtha arrived at DTE at 17:01.
Toledo, OH: Arrivals were Federal Kushiro, Dirk S. VanEnkevort/Michigan Trader, American Century and Samuel deChamplain/Innovation. Algoma Sault and John D. Leitch are at CSX. Leonard M/Huron Spirit departed for Cleveland at 01:23..
Marblehead, OH: Laura L. VanEnkevort/Joseph H. Thompson loaded stone and left for Cleveland at 05:05. American Courage was a late evening arrival to Holcim.
Sandusky, OH: Robert S. Pierson arrived at 05:05 to lo:ad coal at Norfolk Southern. She departed for Ashtabula at 18:03. CSL Niagara arrived late Friday night
Cleveland, OH: Federal Yukon left at 03:06 and is heading to Burns Harbor. New York/Double Skin 509A departed for Detroit at 08:08. Laura L. VanEnkevort/Joseph H. Thompson arrived at 10:02 to unload at RiverDock. Leonard M/Huron Spirit arrived at the Port dock 24E at 12:50. Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder arrived at 14:04.
