Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
Although the duty of hosting the Lake Superior Parade of Sail falls to Two Harbors, Minnesota this year, the Twin Ports were still treated to the docking of one of the tall ships – minus the crowds – at the old Northern Pacific ore dock in Superior on Monday morning. This would be the replica sailing vessel Pride of Baltimore II, no stranger to Duluth-Superior herself after taking part in previous festivals on several occasions. The vessel got underway for the dock at 08:30 after spending the night anchored between the inner and outer Superior breakwaters, tying up on the west side to wait for the trip to Two Harbors on August 4. The “big” traffic of the day would begin in the fullest sense of the word when 1,013.5-foot Paul R. Tregurtha, Queen of the Lakes, arrived Duluth at 09:24 on her weekly run for coal at SMET. Algoma Transport was next inbound under the Aerial Lift Bridge at 13:25 with salt from Goderich. After entering the harbor, she simply continued straight ahead and pulled into the Compass Minerals dock to unload her cargo. American Century arrived Superior at 14:41 to load iron ore pellets at BNSF Dock 5, while Heerengracht left Duluth six hours later after one day unloading at the port terminal. Her cargo, mining equipment from Antwerp, Belgium, will be making its way to the Minnesota Iron Range as the saltie heads up the lake for Thunder Bay. Paul R. Tregurtha would depart at 22:46 with a split load for St. Clair and Monroe. Federal Kushiro is at the port terminal putting ashore barite sacks, Federal Churchill is discharging cement powder at Ash Grove, Iryda is loading at Gavilon, and Maxima sits off the piers waiting for the latter to finish.
Below is a time-lapse of the Algoma Transport arriving in Duluth and pulling into Compass Minerals, as seen from the vessel.
