Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
Pride of Baltimore II was up bright and early on the day of the 2022 Parade of Sail, departing Superior at 05:37 to join the rest of the tall ship fleet up in Two Harbors. Usually held in Duluth, this year’s Festival of Sail was relocated up the North Shore due to ongoing construction on the DECC seawall. Other morning traffic in the Twin Ports included the Duluth departures of 1,000-foot Walter J. McCarthy Jr. and 806-foot Hon. James L. Oberstar. The McCarthy was loaded with taconite pellets for Cleveland, while the Oberstar headed out light for Marquette after discharging stone. In the early afternoon, Indiana Harbor finished up loading approximately 63,000 tons of Keetac taconite pellets under the conveyors at the BNSF Allouez Taconite Facility. The footer pulled away from the dock –  making good use of her side thrusters – and cleared the Wisconsin Point Light for Gary at around 14:00. Captain Henry Jackman weighed anchor from out on the lake and made her way inbound at 14:41 to load Hibtac pellets. Five hours later, the Duluth arrival of Canadian laker CSL Laurentien was the last vessel passage for Thursday. She will be loading iron ore at CN Dock 6 in a somewhat uncommon move. The harbor still remains busy with a rush of August salties; no changes have taken place since yesterday’s report: Iryda is at Gavilon, Maxima waits for the berth out at anchor, and Fagelgracht, Federal Kushiro, and Federal Churchill are moored at the port terminal. Iryda’s load of grain is taking much longer than expected and has likely run into difficulties of some sort. The Churchill is tentatively scheduled to depart either Friday or Saturday after emptying her holds of cement powder at Ash Grove.

Southern Lake Michigan Ports – Joshua Hebeisen
Calumet Harbor, IL: South Chicago was rocking early Thursday evening with the arrival of saltie Mick, named for Rolling Stones lead singer Mick Jagger. She is one of several vessels in the dship Carriers fleet named after rock stars, with others paying homage to icons like Janis Joplin and Charlie Parker. Mick rolled her way down the Calumet River for Chicago Rail and Port after proceeding inbound the breakwater at 16:47. The rest of the day was typical with the arrivals of frequent visitors Caroline McKee/Commander (16:31) and Samuel de Champlain/Innovation (17:47), but hey – you can’t always get what you want.
Indiana Harbor, IN: Mesabi Miner departed Dock 7H at 11:29 for the Twin Ports; Dirk S. VanEnkevort/Michigan Trader arrived for the same dock at 17:05. The tug and barge, coming from Marquette, are infrequent visitors to Indy.
Buffington, IN: H. Lee White backed in from Drummond Island with stone at 21:45.
Gary Harbor, IN: A GLF family reunion took place on Thursday night as AAA sisters Philip R. Clarke and Arthur M. Anderson unloaded directly across from one another in the Gary Works slip. The Clarke was putting ashore her first cargo in over two years, a load of taconite from Two Harbors, while the Anderson was discharging blast furnace trim from Duluth. The two had steamed into port at 18:34 and 23:35, respectively.
Burns Harbor, IN: Isolda departed FMT for Milwaukee at 21:27.

St. Joseph – Benton Harbor, MI – Joshua Hebeisen

Detroit, MI – Windsor, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
American Integrity arrived at 05:15 for Mistersky and departed at 09:06 for Superior to continue her recent involvement in the coal trade. Martin tied up for Sterling Fuels just before 19:00. 22:00 would find the CSL veteran headed back down the Detroit River for Windsor Salt. At around the same time, the two oldest ladies sailing the lakes would pass one another in a Class of 1942 80th-year reunion. Cement boat Alpena went to dock at Holcim with cement from her namesake port, sailing by proud WWII veteran Lee A. Tregurtha outbound from Dearborn for Stoneport.
