Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
Hungry for a load of coal at the Superior Midwest Energy Terminal, James R. Barker was inbound the Duluth Ship Canal at 02:38 early Friday morning. The 1,004-foot behemoth spun around in the basin and backed under the Blatnik Bridge to the dock, where she began taking on a split load (58,000 tons overall) destined for DTE power plants in St. Clair and Monroe. Farther south in Allouez Bay, Algoma’s Captain Henry Jackman topped off her load of Hibtac pellets at BNSF Dock 5 and headed outbound for the lake at 04:28. Her 30,000-ton cargo will be delivered to Quebec in about a week. After moving in a back-and-forth pattern off the entry killing time until the Jackman departed, Burns Harbor made her way inbound at 05:05 and headed for the dock to load. Duluth saw the arrival of John G. Munson an hour later; the classic laker was loaded with stone and made her way to CN-Hallett Dock 5 to unload. After CSL Laurentien cast off from CN Dock 6 and departed for Quebec in the early afternoon, the Munson made her way over to the shiploader at around 16:30 to begin taking on a load of Minntac pellets under the conveyors. The Barker was outbound at 18:54 and would be followed under the Aerial Lift Bridge by Federal Churchill just over an hour later. Fednav’s saltie is sailing up the North Shore empty for Thunder Bay after spending over a week in port discharging cement at Ash Grove. At 21:19, Joseph L. Block was inbound Duluth with stone, but was forced to tie up on the eastern side of CN 6 until the Munson clears the dock. Fagelgracht is putting ashore wind turbine components at Clure Public Marine Terminal Berth 1, Federal Kushiro is just north of her unloading barite bags at Berth 2, while Iryda is on the Superior side of the harbor and (still) moored at Gavilon. Maxima waits out on the lake for whatever is causing the delay.
