Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
The John J Boland arrived in Lackawanna around 3AM on the 18th. She came in the South Entrance, winded in the Outer Harbor, & backed into Gateway Metroport. The ship squeezed in alongside the Houtmangracht and docked on the West wall of the Lackawanna Canal. They unloaded a partial sand cargo on the North end of the Coke Oven side to lighten up the boat enough so they could make it to the CSI landing in Buffalo. This was highly unusual since the West side of Gateway Metroport’s facilities there are hardly ever used and it’s been at least 20 years since any revenue product had been placed over there. The City Ship Canal isn’t deep enough to have the Boland come is as heavily loaded as she was when she left Brevort so this extra move was needed. Lightering the boat went according to plan and she then shifted to the CSI sand wharf around 12Noon by going back out to the lake & then in the North Entrance. While that was happening, the American Mariner arrived for the General Mills plant. They dropped the hooks off the Safe Water Beacon and waited for the Boland to depart. Around 11PM the Boland was done and backed out for the Outer Harbor on her way to Port Gypsum, MI. Heading West, they met their sister ship out in the lake and then the Mariner came in without tugs for the Frontier Elevator.
