Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
With another load of iron ore for Indiana Harbor, Interlake Steamship Company’s James R. Barker – the “original” Barker, if you will – cleared the Duluth Entry at 00:44 after casting off from CN Dock 6 around midnight. She would be followed outbound at 05:32 by odd duck ATB combo Defiance/Ashtabula, loaded with petroleum coke from Midwest Energy. The pair projects to deliver their cargo to Alpena in the next several days. More typical SMET customer Paul R. Tregurtha was back in town 45 minutes later for her weekly 38,000/30,000-ton split of coal, the two halves of which would be destined for St. Clair and Monroe, respectively, upon the footer’s 19:09 departure. 14:12 saw the Superior arrival of Michipicoten for Keetac at BNSF… blink and you might miss it, she was back out on the lake setting course for the Soo just four hours later, probably in an effort to catch the boatnerds sleeping. While there was no other traffic through the piers on Sunday, saltie Amoenitas remained at the port terminal unloading project cargo.
Marquette, MI – Oggdo Bogdo
Dirk S. VanEnkevort departed LS&I with a load of taconite for Indiana Harbor at 4:51. Next up is the Herbert C. Jackson. Herbie should be inbound sometime after midnight.
Port Inland, MI – Andrew Meyer
Port Inland had a much busier weekend than usual, with Manitowoc getting the good times off to a good start with a 0413 Saturday morning departure. John J. Boland would occupy the dock about a half hour later, filling her holds with UP stone and outbound at 1921. Arthur M. Anderson was waiting in the wing to take her place. Anderson would send the night loading and depart just before 1100, only to be replaced by Lower Lakes Towing’s Manitoulin at 1112. It looks as though after the Manitoulin’s departure, likely sometime late Sunday evening, there shouldn’t be too much traffic early in the week.

Southern Lake Michigan Ports – Andrew Meyer
Chicago, IL: Algoma Compass arrived Calumet Harbor at 0507 and departed ten hours later. Should be the only thing for the next day or so.
Indiana Harbor, IN: After several days of a ship traffic hiatus, Indiana Harbor welcomed the Calumet to town on Saturday morning at 0522. The vessel was outbound late that evening. Joseph L. Block snuck into town under cover of night only a few hours later, making port at 0308 Sunday. The Dirk S. VanEnkevort is making a fairly infrequent appearance on August 30, followed by the James R. Barker sometime early next week as well.
Gary, IN: Edwin H. Gott made port just before midnight Saturday evening. She had a remarkably fast unload of eight hours, which was ironic considering this was her double-split load from the north shore earlier last week. Apparently it was all ending up in the same place! Her fleetmate and boom-less twin Edgar B. Speer is due to follow at Gary works early Monday morning.
Burns Harbor, IN: Burns Harbor arrived at her namesake port after the Joseph L. Block pulled out for Indy at 0056. The former rolled in at 0133. Lee A. Tregurtha is expected to arrive around mid-morning Monday. Presumably the Burns will depart before then.
Grand Haven, MI – Oggdo Bogdo
Grand River Navigation’s Calumet arrived Meekhof’s D&M to unload aggregate from Indiana Harbor at 9:38. They would depart in the afternoon at 15:10, due next at Bruce Mines.
Muskegon, MI – Oggdo Bogdo
Ashton Marine’s tug/barge Candace Elise finally got underway again at 13:08 after taking a short summer vacation starting on August 17th. They had been stationed at Ashton Marine’s dock. Interlake’s Kaye E. Barker graced Muskegon with her arrival at 21:38 to unload stone at lakeside Verplank. Due next is the steamer Wilfred Sykes.
Drummond Island, MI – Andrew Meyer
Wilfred Sykes made a fairly infrequent visit to Drummond Island on Sunday, arriving at 0346 to load stone for Muskegon. She departed at 1358.
Meldrum Bay, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Out with the new, in with the old… 2017-built Algoma Innovator’s 06:15 departure for Sarnia with stone was followed immediately by an appearance of 79-year-old Lower Lakes veteran Cuyahoga. She would also depart downbound at 16:00 upon completion of her load, but will be headed farther south to Cleveland.
Goderich, ON – Bruce Douglas
Algoma Compass cleared 08.35 Friday upbound for Chicago with salt. ATB Dorothy Ann barge Pathfinder cleared 15.55 Sunday downbound to Toledo with salt. Algoma Niagara arrived 14.58 Sunday loading at Compass Minerals.
Stoneport, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Algoma Buffalo was outbound at noon for Windsor, to be followed later in the afternoon by classic Hon. James L. Oberstar. Interlake’s handsome veteran headed north for Meldrum Bay around 21:00 to finish loading a Twin Ports-bound split load of stone.
Calcite, MI – Andrew Meyer
Calcite had a nice flow of traffic over the weekend. Interlake’s classic Lee A. Tregurtha arrived at 1235 on Saturday to pick up a load of stone for Burns Harbor. She would subsequently depart at 0401 on Sunday morning. H. Lee White would follow a near identical pattern of the Lee, arriving at 1201 on Saturday and departing at 0500 Sunday. Great Republic would make one of her frequent appearances only 19 minutes after the White’s departure. She would depart at 1838 Sunday evening. American Mariner is due on Monday at 0500.
Detroit, MI – Windsor, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
American Century departed at 00:22 en route to Duluth-Superior, leaving the port quiet until sunrise and the 06:30 arrival of elderly Alpena. The beloved steamer quietly tiptoed in to unload cement at Holcim as Clyde S. VanEnkevort rumbled in from Toledo pushing Erie Trader. The tug’s rhythmic Mak diesels guided her barge into the EES Coke slip at Zug Island to unload for the remainder of the day. At 07:00 sharp on the other side of the border, cruise ship Pearl Mist docked alongside Windsor’s Dieppe Gardens to give her passengers a day of adventures in the city. Just nine days earlier had been the 80th anniversary of the tragic WWII Dieppe Raid for which the memorial gardens are named. Sticking on the Canadian side of the river, Manitowoc tied up at Southwestern Sales West around 11:00 before shifting just south to Lafarge in the early afternoon, unloading the entirety of her stone cargo from Port Inland prior to an evening departure for Stoneport. A return trip from Conneaut saw an upbound John G. Munson stop for fuel at Mistersky from 15:46 to 17:40, tanker Iver Bright came south to anchor in the meantime, and Alpena steamed outbound for Essexville with the remainder of her powered cement cargo at dinnertime. Coming from Marblehead, American Courage was tying up at Mistersky shortly before midnight. Sea Eagle II is still perched at St. Marys Cement; Flevoborg is near the entrance to the Rouge at Nicholson.
