Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
The quietest day of traffic the Twin Ports have had in quite some time saw just one vessel passage each through both entries on Monday. Duluth got the spotlight, with brawny saltie Amoenitas departing for Milwaukee at 08:42 after unloading project cargo (generators) at the port terminal. Mesabi Miner arrived Superior exactly eight hours later in search of more ore from the Iron Range.

Marquette, MI – Oggdo Bogdo
The Herbert C. Jackson arrived at 00:36 to load taconite at LS&I. She would depart later that morning at 09:13 to unload at Dearborn on the Rouge River. Due up next at the docks in the coming days are the now commonplace footer American Spirit and the Jackson’s fleet mate Lee A. Tregurtha.

St. Joseph-Benton Harbor, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Arriving with cement products to discharge at the local Holcim plant, G.L. Ostrander/Integrity made port at noon and were soon met by an afternoon storm sweeping along the coast. The weather would settle down in the evening, giving way to a blazing orange sunset as the Alpena-bound tug/barge combo backed their way out the St. Joseph River and into a calm Lake Michigan.

Muskegon, MI – Oggdo Bogdo
Muskegon saw an impressive pair of classic lakers on Monday. A morning departure of the AAA Kaye E. Barker from lakeside Verplank at 05:14 kicked things off, headed to Port Inland. CML’s Wilfred Sykes followed, arriving at 13:29, though her docking at Verplank was delayed several hours after a failed first attempt due to weather conditions. The Sykes would ease into the dock to unload stone from Drummond Island at about 19:15, nearly six hours after she first arrived through the piers. The Barker and the Sykes have been matching ports of call for nearly a week now; we shall wait and see if the latter continues the pattern and heads to Port Inland as well. Also of note, the US EPA’s largest research vessel Lake Guardian arrived Sunday afternoon, and its smaller fleet mate W.G. Jackson gave a short tour to visiting Michigan US Senator Gary Peters.

Stoneport, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Hatches off and ready to load, Manitowoc settled in along the breakwater around 20:20.

Detroit, MI – Windsor, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Getting underway from DTE’s EES Coke in the waning minutes of the weekend, Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader left town at 00:13 Monday morning for a trip up to the head of the lakes in Superior. American Courage followed the pair upbound at 01:31 from Mistersky bound for Belle River and an eventual journey to Calcite, with former fleetmate American Spirit taking her place about an hour later. A 07:08 departure saw the footer headed for Marquette or bust. Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder, swinging on the hook down the river since about 05:40, were on hand to complete the swap at the fuel dock. A Detroit River swap taking place about an hour before had been much more glamorous, with outbound cruise ship Pearl Mist meeting new French liner Le Dumont-d’Urville as the latter visited the Motor City for the first time. She tied up at the port authority dock throughout the day before herding her passengers back onboard and sailing north for Mackinac Island at dinnertime. Algoma Buffalo stampeded into port for Windsor’s Lafarge dock at 07:30 with stone from Stoneport, departing nine hours later for Goderich; Dorothy Ann guided Pathfinder downbound to resume the journey to Cleveland with salt shortly after 10:00. Anchored tanker Iver Bright soon made her way to Mistersky with no more ships on the dock’s schedule for the remainder of the day. SRM Concrete received a partial load from Arthur M. Anderson at 17:31, Flevoborg departed Nicholson for another American metropolis in Chicago at 18:23, and the venerable Anderson was underway for Belle River with the rest of her stone before midnight. Sea Eagle II remains roosting at St. Marys Cement with her barge St. Marys Cement II.
