Buffalo, NY – Bill Kloss
With the help of Towboat USA out of Sturgeon Point Marina, the tug Nathan S. recovered the wayward barge AM 2101 on the afternoon of September 1st from Van Buren Bay. The towboat was able to get a line on her and with it’s motors wide open, slowly crawl out to deeper waters where the tug took over. They made it back to Lackawanna without further incident that evening to pick up more windmill parts.

Next up was NACC Capri on the 4th when she arrived around 6PM and met the Vermont at the North Entrance. She was winded in the Outer Harbor and towed up river stern first through a channel clogged with pleasure craft and tour boats. They were all tied up at Holcim and unloading by 7:30PM on a beautiful late Summer evening, glowing under a bright setting sun.

The tug Defiance came in the South Entrance pushing her big barge Ashtabula on the 13th with sand from Brevort, MI. She slid in right down the West wall inside the Lackawanna Canal next to the tug Nathan S. and her barges at the Main Dock on the East side. Gateway had mowed down the brush along the apron on the Coke Oven side so they could unload over there due to lack of space anywhere else. It’s been about 20 years since cargo was placed on that side so this (and the previous month’s trip by the Boland) was somewhat of a rare occurrence. They needed to lighten the boat before heading over to Buffalo for the CSI landing.

While we do not currently have daily write-ups for the following ports, their respective port authority websites post schedules of vessel traffic that are embedded below. Each schedule takes the form of a miniature webpage within a box – scroll with your cursor within the box (or slide your finger within the box on a mobile device) to move through the schedule as you would a normal webpage. To move up or down the actual Port Reports page itself, make sure your cursor/finger is outside of the box.
