Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
Boat traffic kicked off for the weekend early on the morning of Saturday, September 10 as American Integrity made a 04:06 departure with ore from West Duluth’s CN Dock 6. Her next stop will be the Cleveland-Cliffs hopper at Indiana Harbor. Coming off the lake around sunrise were more footers in James R. Barker and Walter J. McCarthy Jr., both headed for the Duluth Ship Canal and less than 15 minutes apart. The pair would make port at 06:39 and 06:48, respectively, with the Barker giving another trademark “Barker Bark” on arrival – Captain Brad is back, y’all! A thousand-footer triple feature arose in the harbor minutes later as the Barker, headed for CN, and the McCarthy, on her way to SMET, passed the outbound Paul R. Tregurtha as the latter crawled her way towards the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge with a load of coal, eventually departing at 07:18 for St. Clair. Burns Harbor made an encore with her 13:48 Superior exit before the streak was broken back in Duluth by venerable Arthur M. Anderson. The classic steamer, loaded with stone, arrived at 15:42 and sailed all the way down the harbor to unload at C. Reiss. After spending several days on the hook off the Duluth piers, Onego Maas weighed anchor and sailed down the length of the Minnesota Point sandbar to proceed inbound Superior at 17:49. While seemingly counterintuitive, the move allows her to better position at Gavilon. Walter J. McCarthy Jr. would wrap up the day at 22:08 when she departed with coal for St. Clair.

Activity resumed in the early hours of Sunday morning with CSL Assiniboine arriving Superior for BNSF at 01:24 and Arthur M. Anderson shifting from C. Reiss to the CN gravity dock an hour later. G.L. Ostrander/Integrity were outbound Packer country at 06:00 after another successful delivery of cement to Holcim, while ABB Vanessa sounded the Gjallarhorn on arrival in a one-long, two-short salute to the Aerial Lift Bridge at 07:00. A beautiful purple-and-gold sunrise over the lake would be indicative of the day’s football game. The Vanessa soon tied up at Clure Public Marine Terminal Berth 1 with the help of tug Kentucky to take on containers. CSL Assiniboine departed Superior at 14:19 for Quebec, and Arthur M. Anderson left Duluth at 15:14 on an uncommon run to Nanticoke. The harbor would not be left without a AAA for long; Philip R. Clarke was inbound at 17:27 to round out the weekend with stone for CN-Hallett Dock 5. Loading wheat at Gavilon is Onega Maas.

Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
Around 3PM on the 13th the Defiance backed her barge out of the Lackawanna Canal to the harbor, winded, and went out the South Entrance. They came back in the North Entrance, met the tug Vermont there, and proceeded up to CSI where the barge finished off the unload up there. At 8:30PM the Vermont docked at the ADM flour mill across the City Ship Canal from the CSI landing to wait for the Ashtabula to finish. Once everything was all set, Vermont took them out stern first for the lake and the Defiance departed for Conneaut.

The New York – DS509A arrived for Tonawanda at 4PM on the dark and gloomy afternoon of the 6th. They met the Vermont at the North Entrance and headed down the Black Rock Canal. The Nathan S. headed out for Erie with the barges AM 2100 and AM 2101 at 11:15PM that night.

Vermont was back on scene at Suite Kote in Tonawanda to escort the New York – DS509A back out at 12:30PM on the 7th. They took them all the way up to the lake where the New York departed for Monroe, MI, remaining in “Push Mode” as they headed West. Out near Dunkirk, they met the inbound Nathan S. with her empty barges coming back to Lackawanna from Erie. The Nathan arrived here around 9PM that evening to load more windmill parts.

Her barges were loaded up by the evening of the 8th so the Nathan S. departed Lackawanna again, bound for Erie, at 5PM.

A very rare visitor arrived at 8:00AM on the 11th when the tug Sarah Andrie came in with the old barge A-390. This was only the Sarah’s second trip to Tonawanda since Andrie bought her back in 2020. After locking through at Black Rock, they headed down to the #29 buoy below the South Grand Island Bridges to wind. The big tug used her twin screws to power through a turn to Port off the old United Refining pier before heading back up river against the current with ease. They secured at the Marathon Terminal around 11:30AM to unload a cargo of hot asphalt from the Suncore Energy refinery in Sarnia.
