Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
Twin Ports traffic had terminated by ten o’clock Saturday morning with just a trio of vessels moving through the piers. The first, Wagenborg saltie Reestborg, made port in Duluth around 05:36 with a small fortune of wind turbine components stashed inside of her holds for safekeeping. The cargo originated in Germany and is currently being offloaded at Berth 1, a process that is estimated to take about two or three days. Unlike some of her fleetmates and fellow salties, the Reestborg lacks onboard cranes atop her deck, allowing her to get some much-needed R&R while the
Duluth Seaway Port Authority’s Clyde Iron Works gantry cranes do the heavy lifting. Sometimes it pays to be a little ship! An hour after the Reestborg made her appearance in Duluth, Superior saw its first and only activity of the day with American Integrity inbound Allouez Bay for BNSF Dock 5. The footer spent the day taking on 63,000 tons of Keetac pellets that will eventually be tossed in the U.S. Steel furnaces at Gary. Midmorning, Paul R. Tregurtha cast off from SMET fully loaded but made a quick pit stop at the port terminal on departure, tying up for about an hour across from Reestborg before pulling back out around 10:00 and clearing the Duluth Ship Canal at 10:28. Her latest coal cargo is another split load destined for St. Clair and Essexville, in that order. She’ll be back up north soon enough. Federal Frontier remains swinging on the hook outside the harbor with an expected arrival date of Sunday or Monday to load wheat at Riverland Ag.

Marquette, MI – Oggdo Bogdo
September 17 officially ‘Marks’ the first arrival of Interlake’s new vessel Mark W. Barker at Marquette, as she took the place of the Kaye E. Barker at 01:04. To the relief of local boatnerds, the fog lifted overnight to allow for good viewing. Meanwhile, the American Spirit continues its typical long load; fleet mates American Integrity and Burns Harbor may each be able to make it to Superior, take turns loading ore, and make it back to the locks before the Spirit moves again. Nobody said loading a thousand footer at those docks is easy! Looking ahead, the Lee A. Tregurtha will make another appearance in a few days.

A fantastic time lapse by Steve Harris captures the Barker loading process in Marquette. Note how the vessel shifts up and down against the dock facing to position herself beneath the chutes.

Grand Haven, MI – Oggdo Bogdo
The Herbert C. Jackson arrived at 03:11 from Port Dolomite, and departed from Verplank at 10:06, due next at Port Inland. A dry spell at Grand Haven seems to be ending, as the Sam Laud will make an arrival in a day or two, coming from Bruce Mines.

Muskegon, MI – Oggdo Bogdo
Samuel de Champlain and Innovation arrived at 11:59 and departed at 19:41, a typical cement run to Holcim. The duo will travel to Alpena next to load up once again.
