Port Inland, MI – Andrew Meyer
Port Inland saw the Sam Laud arrive at 2349 on September 26, and departed about 12 hours later. That would be the last traffic until Wednesday, with the Joseph L. Block arriving just after midnight. She’d make a very fast turnaround with a departure at 0522. Calumet would take her spot in town less than a half hour later. She’d have a more standard turnaround, with a 1540 departure. Regular visitors Manitowoc and Great Republic are due on Friday.
Southern Lake Michigan Ports – Andrew Meyer
Chicago, IL: John D. Leitch departed Calumet Harbor at 1326 Thursday, showing an Indiana Harbor destination. She proceeded north probably 20 miles and them began doing large loops in the lake. She’s still doing it as of 2030 Thursday.
Indiana Harbor, IN: A 1249 departure on Tuesday marked the only large traffic for Indiana Harbor on Tuesday. Mesabi Miner is due this weekend.
Gary, IN: Gary works saw the Indiana Harbor arrive at 2051 on September 26 and departed about 23 hours later, a slightly irregular visit, but nothing uncommon. It was the only break in some solid Great Lakes Fleet action over the last several weeks. The GLF would continue to feed the furnaces at Gary, with Edgar B. Speer making an arrival on September 28 in the early evening and the Great Republic early in the morning on Thursday. The latter would depart at 1703 for Port Inland, the former is still in port.
Burns Harbor, IN: A rather quiet three days in Burns Harbor was ended Thursday with three arrivals. Solina finally weighed anchor and arrived at 0723, followed by fellow saltie Elbeborg. American Integrity would round out the trio with a high noon arrival. Another saltie, Federal Yukon is due Friday, as is the Burns Harbor. It may be with a full port that either or both could swing on the hook for a bit.
Calcite, MI – Andrew Meyer
After a week of being fairly quiet, the middle of this week has proven to be a little busier for the port. The ageless wonder Olive L. Moore pushed her barge Menominee into port at 0359, only to depart 20 minutes later, presumably anchor, and then proceed to arrive at 1127 on Wednesday. She’d depart at 0140 on Thursday morning. It’s likely the first arrival was to drop off a crewman, that’s the only explanation I can think of. Philip R. Clarke arrived at 1232 on Tuesday, and departed on Thursday morning at 0300. Thursday proved to have more action than the Clarke, with Lee A. Tregurtha arriving at 0324 and departing at 1901. Michipicoten would arrive at 1022, but is yet to depart. Kaye Barker and Robert S. Pierson are due on Friday.
