Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
If only one vessel arrives the Twin Ports in a 24-hour span, it might as well be the Wilfred Sykes. Between the Elbeborg’s 19:37 arrival Monday evening and the American Integrity’s departure at exactly the same time the following night, the only traffic to make its way through the Duluth or Superior piers was Central Marine Logistic’s classic 1949-built laker. Clear skies and calm seas greeted the fan-favorite steamer as she came off the lake at blue hour and beneath the Aerial Lift Bridge at 06:28. A sizable crowd for an early Tuesday morning was treated to a nice master’s salute – the typical Sykes special – for their efforts. As in her only other trip of the season back in July, the vessel arrived with a load of limestone to discharge at the Graymont Superior facility about halfway down the bay. After tying up, settling in, and getting the cargo flowing off the boom, the Sykes was passed in the harbor by 1,000-foot Walter J. McCarthy Jr., making her way over to West Duluth’s CN Dock 6 for a load of taconite pellets following a delay at Superior’s Elevator M. It was back on the move again for the Sykes after finishing up her unload at Graymont, this time bound for a rare trip to Silver Bay to load sinter off the stockpiles. Her departure, marked at 18:25, will hopefully not be the last we see of the steamer on the western end of the lake this year. Federal Hunter was the last Duluth passage on Tuesday, arriving at 22:20 and enlisting the help of G-tug Kentucky to assist her to the Ash Grove Cement dock at Rice’s Point. There, the saltie will soon begin the lengthy process of discharging powdered cement. The aforementioned American Integrity departed Superior at 19:37 with ore for Gary, and was followed in just over an hour later by footer fleetmate Burns Harbor. I’ll bet you $5 she loads for her namesake port. Stationary ships in port include Philip R. Clarke loading blast furnace trim at CN-Hallett Dock 5, Elbeborg loading beet pulp pellets at Gavilon, and poor American Spirit – having already spent too much time at the wall this season – undergoing engine repairs at Enbridge. Get well soon!

Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
The Mark W. Barker was on her way back to Buffalo with more sand from Detroit on October 2nd when a strong Southerly wind blew all of the good water out of Buffalo and dropped the gauges here. She slowed down to 5.5 knots from her lake speed of 13 so they could time their arrival to better match the water coming back up and hugged the North shore of Lake Erie for a smoother ride. They finally arrived into Buffalo for the CSI landing at 11:52PM. A long and somewhat difficult unload took place before they were eventually able to back out on their own for the lake at 9:30PM on the 3rd.
Dean Marine got the contract to dredge Dunkirk harbor this year. They had the small tug Andrew J. spending a few weeks in early October running dump scows out to the lake from the dredge rig as they worked around the public pier area there.
The large tug Manitou arrived with a brand new hopper barge from Erie, PA for delivery to the New York State Canal Corp. at 8:30AM on the 4th. She went down to Tonawanda and handed it off to them at the entrance to the Erie canal. After heading back up light tug, they entered the Buffalo River, turned around off the USS Little Rock, and headed out for the lake around 12:30PM, bound for Port Huron.
