Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
Another weekly dose of PRT to SUW was spiced up by an unusual entry via the Superior side of the harbor. After entering Allouez Bay in the 01:00 darkness, the big Tregurtha crawled up the harbor making about 2.5 knots and would not tie up at Midwest Energy until after 03:00. While the crew probably appreciated the change of pace, the move was likely made to accommodate Interlake fleetmate Mesabi Miner as she pulled away from CN Dock 6 around the same time. Things can get a little tight in the inner harbor when two boats require passage beneath the Blatnik Bridge. The Miner would clear the Duluth piers at 03:15 and set course for Cleveland.
Three hours later, side-tanked CSL Tadoussac emerged from behind the BNSF loading facility and made her way out to the lake with 30,000 tons of Keetac pellets. Anchored Atlantic Huron would soon be inbound to keep the chain of CSL lakers going at the dock, though her 30,000 tons would be loaded for Hamilton. At the same time, Stewart J. Cort settled in at anchor alongside Algoma Discovery to keep the waiting line two deep. The latter would get her chance at the dock shortly after 20:00 following the Huron’s 19:33 departure. In a rare occurrence, Algoma’s veteran bulker is already partially loaded with blast furnace trim upon her arrival to the dock; she is expected to take on only 20,000 tons of additional product to fill out her holds.
No other traffic was recorded on Friday, though Federal Hunter remains at Ash Grove unloading cement from Turkey.
Marquette, MI – Oggdo Bogdo
After an extended stay at the ore docks, Clyde S. VanEnkevort finally departed at 08:26. The tug/barge duo is headed to Toledo to unload. Arriving at Marquette next was the Hon. James L. Oberstar at 20:24. A quicker load is likely to follow. The surprisingly less frequent visitor Kaye E. Barker will head up in the next few days as well after leaving Grand Haven.
Grand Haven, MI – Oggdo Bogdo
The striped Great Republic made her way out of Verplank around midday at 12:55. She is headed to Port Inland next; she is likely to bring stone from there up to Duluth, and then head to Two Harbors to load ore. The always lovely Kaye E. Barker made another visit to Verplank at 20:49 to unload stone from Port Inland. Once she’s done there, a trip to Marquette is scheduled, one she’s made less frequently this year.
Stoneport, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
21:00 at the dock saw another VanEnkevort/Trader visit for stone. Today’s happy couple is Joyce and a Trader of the Great Lakes variety.
Detroit, MI – Windsor, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Joyce L. VanEnkevort/Great Lakes Trader grumbled past the twinkling Motor City skyline just minutes into Friday morning after fueling up overnight at Mistersky. Next on the pair’s agenda is a trip to Stoneport for an aggregate cargo. Fueling action would pick up again after 01:00 with the arrival of Algoma Buffalo for Windsor’s Sterling facility. The American-turned-Canadian laker continued upbound two hours later, bound for Goderich to satisfy her “salt tooth” – she’s had quite the craving the past few seasons. Farther down the river at ADM, Harvest Spirit cast off from the dock at 02:00 and took up a stationary position nearby for the remainder of the day. She may be cleaning out her holds before returning to the berth. After a split unload on the River Rouge and just north of the Ambassador Bridge, 08:16 saw an empty John G. Munson outbound and ready to take on more stone at an infrequent calling port in Bruce Mines. Sea Eagle II/St. Marys Cement II soared in with cement for St. Marys at 16:43, Lee A. Tregurtha arrived EES Coke to unload coal from Sandusky at 20:50, and American Mariner was another Mistersky customer with a 22:10 visit for a late-night drink.
