Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
A quiet day in the Twin Ports saw a thick wave of sea smoke roll into town before the boats, covering the harbor in an early-season blanket of white typically reserved for the coldest winter months. More smoke, decidedly more black, would appear later in the evening when Dirk S. VanEnkevort/Michigan Trader arrived Duluth with limestone from Calcite. The pair went to Graymont to discharge their cargo and will eventually be making their way up the North Shore to Silver Bay, continuing a run of vessels to load off the Northshore Mining stockpile following a period of inactivity. Roerborg was inbound just 12 minutes later from Germany, her shiny cargo of wind turbine parts above deck glowing in the reddish tint of the Aerial Lift Bridge. The saltie tied up at the port terminal’s Berth 7 to unload. Fellow saltie Federal Hunter is at the opposite end of Rice’s Point discharging cement at Ash Grove. There was no traffic recorded on the Superior side of the harbor, where BNSF Dock 5 continues to undergo scheduled maintenance. American Spirit, however, remains at Enbridge undergoing emergency repairs. We just can’t seem to get all the footers out there at once! I always said 13 was an unlucky number…
Marquette, MI – Oggdo Bogdo
A busy day of ship traffic on Monday; some Interlake overlap occurred as the Lee A. Tregurtha arrived at 03:28 before the Kaye E. Barker departed at 06:48 for Dearborn. The Tregurtha would depart at 12:54, though she will diverge from the Barker and head further south down to Toledo to unload. Also arriving was the American Mariner, an uncommon sight at the ore docks. She was inbound at 17:04, possibly on the Soo run. The Joyce L. VanEnkevort is still on her way up, pushing the Great Lakes Trader barge.
Port Inland, MI – Andrew Meyer
Victory and Maumee arrived at 2139 on Saturday evening. They would depart Sunday morning at 1129. Other than that, a quiet weekend characterized the port.
Southern Lake Michigan Ports – Andrew Meyer
Chicago, IL: Pichon cleared the area at 0737 for Duluth Monday morning. Undaunted is due in Chicago on Tuesday morning. Exeborg remains in port.
Indiana Harbor, IN: Walter J. McCarthy Jr. arrived at 1425 on Sunday afternoon. She’d depart at an equally respectable hour of 1000 on Monday. Arriving Sunday was the James R. Barker at 1109. Baie Comeau was also outbound Sunday evening.
Gary, IN: The American Integrity arrived on Saturday evening at 2121. She’d spend roughly 32 hours in town before an 0500 departure Monday. Edwin H. Gott would have a shorter interval with a Sunday arrival at 1622 and an early Monday morning departure. Regular visitor Edgar B. Speer is due sometime in the next couple days with a load of Two Harbors ore.
Burns Harbor, IN: Burns Harbor has been pretty silent over the weekend. Burns Harbor spent the weekend in her namesake port, arriving Saturday night and departing early Monday morning. It’s anyone’s guess where she’s off to next. Happy days are here again for Burns Harbor, with the Happy River due to arrive early Tuesday morning from Essexville with a big load of happiness. Always nice to see the BigLift ships.
Grand Haven, MI – Oggdo Bogdo
Two classic lakers made their way into port to unload at Verplank on Monday, beginning with Interlake’s Herbert C. Jackson, arriving at 14:49 and departing at 21:20. She unloaded stone from Port Dolomite, and is headed up to load more stone at Port Inland. The John G. Munson would take her place at 22:19 to unload from Bruce Mines, an unusual stop for her. In fact, both the loading and unloading sites are atypical for the Munson. She hasn’t been to Grand Haven in at least a few year
Muskegon, MI – Oggdo Bogdo
The small but timeless Alpena departed at 05:38 for her namesake to load up more cement. Hopefully she will be back soon. As if one all-time great ship isn’t enough, the mighty Wilfred Sykes will be returning to Muskegon in the next day or so with a load of dolomite from Drummond Island.
Manistee, MI – Chris Franckowiac
Algoma Central Corporation’s Algoma Buffalo arrived Manistee today on her third visit of the year. The Canadian flagged vessel delivered over 16,000 tons of road salt from Goderich, ON to the Rieth-Riley dock. The ship departed around 4 PM, bound for Meldrum Bay, ON to load stone.
Port Dolomite, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
A pair of classy classic lakers were inbound for stone Monday, beginning with Great Lakes Fleet’s steamer Philip R. Clarke. She (literally) burned the midnight oil with a 00:01 arrival and loaded overnight for Duluth, heading outbound for her home port at 13:00. Saginaw backed in about two hours later after patiently inching towards Cedarville throughout the afternoon.
Drummond Island, MI – Andrew Meyer
Wilfred Sykes made a pit stop in Drummond after her downbound trip to Toledo. She’d arrive at 2330 on October 9 and depart Monday morning at 0952. Great Republic is due from Belle Isle in the next several days.
Stoneport, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Calumet chugged in at midnight before departing 10.5 hours later for St. Joe.
Calcite, MI – Andrew Meyer
Calcite remains busy with a steady flow of traffic. After the Manitowoc’s departure on Sunday early AM, the nearly century old Olive L. Moore guided her barge Menominee into town around 0600. Less than four hours later, the Arthur M. Anderson approached the port for another load of twin ports-bound stone. The Moore and Anderson would both depart within an hour of each other late in the evening on Sunday. Replacing the pair in town was the H. Lee White, with a late Sunday arrival and a Monday evening departure. Cuyahoga is due for the second time in about 10 days sometime Tuesday afternoon.
Detroit, MI – Windsor, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Hon. James L. Oberstar was In The Heights early Monday morning, arriving at 01:05 for Dearborn and neighboring Dearborn Heights to unload taconite pellets at Cleveland-Cliffs’ appropriately-named Dearborn Works. The cargo, as usual, originated in Marquette. Algoma Compass was inbound at 03:23 for Lafarge to discharge stone from Stoneport, later shifting down to fuel at Sterling before heading due north for Goderich midafternoon. Great Republic had followed her inbound with stone from Port Inland to be put ashore at Motor City Materials. The Republic would beat the Compass out, departing at 11:16 to unload the final portion of her cargo along the St. Clair River. Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader chugged inbound from Toledo at 08:06 with coal for EES Coke; the pair were scooting in to nab their spot at Mistersky at midnight. Also appearing on the Detroit River around 08:00 was Cuyahoga, elder gal of the Canadian fleet and a customer to the Canadian side of the river – she tied up at Southwestern Sales East to unload from Marblehead. Unlike corporate fleetmate Sam Laud, no troubles were had in the channel off Peche Island. From 08:00 to 09:00, Harvest Spirit drifted closer and closer to ADM from her spot at anchor a short distance away before finally tying up to load. Maybe a case of the Monday mornings. Le Dumont D’Urville cruised in at 11:33 to hang out for the afternoon before continuing upbound for Mackinac Island at 20:10. Meanwhile, the Oberstar climbed down around noon and departed at 13:37 for Stoneport.
