Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
Big boat traffic in the Twin Ports would more than double on Wednesday after a cold start to the week. At 01:33, Philip R. Clarke came steaming into her namesake port with a load of stone from Cedarville’s Port Dolomite. Making her way down the harbor, the veteran AAA-class laker would tie up to unload at CN-Hallett Dock 5. Some unique views were offered throughout the day given the Clarke’s close proximity to sister Arthur M. Anderson, loading ore under the gravity chutes just a few docks east. The photogenic fleetmates would even strike up a few different poses to appease the aerial photographers, with the Anderson shifting up to the shiploader for a bit to take a delay and the Clarke eventually moving down her own dock facing to begin a long load of blast furnace trim. 06:07 saw a pitch-black arrival of saltie Humbergracht and a load of bagged quartz sand from Turkey. G-tug Missouri assisted the first-time Twin Ports visitor to Berth 7 at the port terminal, where she settled in and would soon get to work discharging the aggregate cargo. The berth’s previous occupant, fellow saltie Roerborg, had shifted directly across the slip to Berth 1 and the gantry cranes overnight to finish putting ashore the remainder of her Canada-bound wind turbine components. The blades themselves measure 260 feet in length and are believed to be the longest of their kind ever handled in North America. For comparison, the ship herself is just a little longer than two of the blades at 557 feet. A third saltie, Federal Hunter, remains on the opposite end of Rice’s Point discharging cement. Once the sun began to rise over the lake, training vessel State of Michigan made an 08:35 appearance and tied up at the DECC to spend the rest of the day in the Zenith City. The cadets and crew aboard would have a great view of the eventual departure of Arthur M. Anderson for Nanticoke at 21:50 and subsequent American Integrity arrival at 22:10. The footer went to fuel at the port terminal and is due next at CN Dock 6. Over in Superior, several days of scheduled maintenance at BNSF Dock 5 were completed Wednesday evening. We should start seeing things pick up again on the Wisconsin side of the harbor before the end of the week.
Marquette, MI – Arthur Pickering
The Great Lakes Trader arrived yesterday and the Hon. James Oberstar arrived this afternoon. On Friday, the American Spirit is scheduled to arrive.
Marquette, MI – Oggdo Bogdo
Tug/barge combo Joyce L. VanEnkevort/Great Lakes Trader departed for Toledo at 19:06, after the docks’ regular visitor Hon. James L. Oberstar took the southern side at 15:30. Once again, since the Oberstar is making less stops at Duluth before her visits to Marquette, her frequency of arrivals seems to be rapid fire. Further ahead, another rare arrival is coming with the American Courage. It will be her first visit since December 2020. The Courage typically sticks to her strengths of river ports.
