Duluth, MN Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
The last week of October began in typical Twin Ports fashion with a handful of familiar faces filling up the logbook on an all-around average day of traffic. Philip R. Clarke finished shifting from Hallett 5 to CN 6 in the opening minutes of Monday morning where her holds, stuffed with limestone just hours earlier, would now begin to be filled up with taconite under the gravity chutes. Iron ore was on the menu on the other side of the harbor as well, with Burns Harbor making another visit to Superior’s BNSF Dock 5 just after 05:00. The Clarke would eventually depart for Gary at 09:07 following a fast load of about eight hours; Burns took about twice as long to take on her cargo and headed outbound Superior at 22:45. In the meantime, American Integrity departed SMET in the early evening with 68,000 tons of coal, clearing the Duluth Ship Canal at 18:21 and setting course for St. Clair. Mesabi Miner remained at the shiploader portion of CN Dock 6 throughout the day.

Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
The 24th of October was a busy day. The MARK W BARKER arrived around Midnight and began doing weather patterns out in the lake off Buffalo as they waited for the JOHN J BOLAND to depart CSI. Around 9:45AM the BOLAND was towed out of the Buffalo River stern first by the VERMONT. The tug helped them wind in the Outer Harbor and the BOALND then shifted back to the Gateway Metroport in Lackawanna via the lake. They came in the South Entrance, winded in the Outer Harbor Southern Channel, and backed in for the Main Dock this time to have some repairs done. After the BOLAND was clear, the MARK BARKER came in without tugs for the CSI landing around 10:15AM. Around 2PM the VERMONT came back out again to meet the MANITOULIN and tow her in stern first for the ADM Standard elevator with the first half of a split load.

The BARKER backed out for the lake at 1:30AM on the morning of the 25th. She went out without tugs, winded in the Outer Harbor, and departed for Monroe, MI. Then around 5:15AM, the MANITOULIN headed down river from the ADM Standard elevator to the General Mills Frontier. She came down bow first to the Watson Basin, stopped, and then maneuvered stern first up the City Ship Canal to the dock. This was the first split load of grain delivered to two elevators in Buffalo since the straight decker era of the early 2000’s and also the first time a ship had shifted docks here via the Watson Basin since then. Continuing that trend of “firsts”, this was the MANITOULIN’s first trip to General Mills, and the first time a Canadian boat has unloaded there since the CUYAHOGA on the very first self-unloader grain delivery here over 20 years ago.

Update on STATE OF MICHIGAN: I found out they departed for Detroit at 6:30PM on the 23rd.
