Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
Joseph L. Block arrived Duluth at 08:31 and in near-freezing temps Thursday morning, her horn warming up in the cold to give the Aerial Lift Bridge a nice master’s salute as she passed beneath with holds full of limestone. Though the sharp turn to port in the inner harbor was followed by a straight shot south down the basin looking into the rising sun, the Block’s cool new visor painted on the upper pilothouse certainly helped protect her from those harmful UV rays. The vessel would tie up at Graymont and commence unloading her cargo into a pile ashore. Simultaneously over in West Duluth, Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader had finished up a load of Cliffs pellets at CN Dock 6 (likely UTAC or Minorca) and were making preparations to rumble out of town for Cleveland. The official time of departure via the Duluth Ship Canal was logged at 10:12. CSL Tadoussac was the third and final vessel passage of the day with a 16:31 afternoon arrival in Superior. She will spend the night loading approximately 30,000 long tons of Keetac pellets at the BNSF Allouez Taconite Facility. After discharging the remainder of her cargo, the Block backed out from Graymont around 19:30 and backed in at CN-owned Hallett Dock 5. She is presumably taking on a load of blast furnace trim.

Sturgeon Bay, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
Just after 08:20, the dead ship tow of the mighty Roger Blough left Bay Shipbuilding to begin the next chapter in the ill-fated vessel’s uncertain future. Lead tug Meredith Ashton will be towing the Blough through the Straits of Mackinac, down Lake Michigan, and across Lake Erie to Conneaut over the next several days with fleetmate Candace Elise bringing up the rear. Once arriving at their destination, the fire-damaged giant will await her fate while in layup at a CN-owned dock. No decision has been made publically regarding what is to come of the Blough, but the breaking yards of Port Colborne lie just a short ways to the east… Boatnerds across the region will be coming out to see the tow and give their goodbyes, just in case.

St. Joseph – Benton Harbor, MI – Michael Moran
The Samuel de Champlain/Innovation is in port. The pair has made it safely to Holcim cement. The question on everyone’s mind: does this mean the harbor is open???

Short answer: kinda. The arrival today took the assistance of two tugboats and also required buoys to be placed to mark the shoal. This is one arrival from one shipping company. Will another company come in, say with a self unloader? That has not been determined. Will all future arrivals until the dredging need expensive tugboat assists? That has yet to be determined. The important thing is that vessels are here safely and that there is cement being unloaded. All further details will have to be determined at a later date.

Port Dolomite, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Arthur M. Anderson steamed up and out of Cedarville at 05:18 with a load of stone for Duluth. Another pair of stripes would grace the dock just before noon on fleetmate Great Republic, also calling on the Carmeuse dock to load aggregate for the Zenith City. Though an official departure time was not logged at midnight, the river boat is underway and heading for the lake – we’ll give her the benefit of the doubt.

Little saltie Edenborg tied up at ADM at 07:00 after spending some time nearby at anchorage. Activity in the harbor would not resume until lunch and supper had been eaten; Everlast/Norman McLeod broke a nearly 12-hour period of inactivity when they pulled in at Mistersky around 18:30 while on the way to Sarnia. The pair would depart at 23:20. An inbound Calumet stopped alongside Southwestern Sales West to unload from Marblehead at 20:10, while Lee A.
