Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
GALE WARNING… For the second day in a row, weather conditions on Lake Superior and beyond limited the Twin Ports to just a pair of passages through the piers. The waves remained calm along the eastern shore as of Sunday evening, but the heavy hitting is out in the open lake where only three brave salties – Fagelgracht, Fivelborg, and Federal Franklin – are passing through.
John J. Boland spent the day within the safe confines of the harbor but still got some exercise with a hop, skip, and jump over to SMET from CN-Hallett Dock 5 at 07:20. There, her holds recently emptied of stone were filled to the brim with petroleum coke off the shiploader. The vessel is likely finished loading but remains at the dock waiting out the weather. The only other movement was the two aforementioned passages, the first being a 08:04 “departure” by Joseph L. Block from BNSF Dock 5 to the immediate outer anchorage. A two-day stay in port would yield a two-part cargo split across state lines, first an appetizer of blast furnace trim from Hallett 5 and more recently a dessert of iron ore pellets at BNSF. While unusual, Algoma Discovery ordered a similar combo off the menu just a few weeks ago. The Block will be headed for Indiana Harbor after conditions improve. Atlantic Huron came off the lake around 08:30 and immediately sailed in for the dock the Block kept warm for her.
Lee A. Tregurtha is still moored at CN Dock 6 and has certainly gotten used to spending significant time in the Duluth-Superior Harbor this season, though weather delays beats long-term layup any month of the year. No other scheduled traffic at the dock has allowed her to stay in one place during the long wait, and she will likely be long gone by the time fleetmate James R. Barker makes a cautious journey across the lake and claims her turn. Federal Katsura continues an extended stay at Ash Grove, but is likely still working on her cement cargo.
Marquette, MI – Oggdo Bogdo
Hon. James L. Oberstar departed at 04:15 Sunday morning for Dearborn after making yet another arrival on Saturday. She and the Victory/Maumee have been pacing the rest of the ships for a while now at Marquette, and the latter will be visiting again shortly.
Holland, MI – Oggdo Bogdo
The Great Republic, due at Holland after loading at Port Inland, is delayed after seeking shelter from gales. Another river vessel, the Manitowoc will be arriving from Milwaukee on Monday, not deterred by weather.
Port Dolomite, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
It is safe to assume nothing scares Undaunted/Pere Marquette 41, but the hardworking tug/barge pair decided to play it safe anyway and spend an extra day in Cedarville before departing into the November seas for Ferrysburg at 11:44. The combo is one again in a holding position albeit with a change of scenery, hanging out off the coast of Mackinac Island with Buffington-bound John G. Munson.
Thessalon, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Algoma Intrepid inched out from the dock at 16:25, due next in Fairport.
Stoneport, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Arthur M. Anderson departed at 11:10 for Windsor, perhaps making a rare trip to the Lafarge dock after fleetmates Philip R. Clarke and John G. Munson have done the same over the past few weeks. AIS indicated that the Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder was approaching the breakwater at 18:15.
Detroit, MI – Windsor, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
After catching up with Roger Blough while unloading in Conneaut, American Integrity sailed north for her next orders in Two Harbors and stopped in Detroit for fuel from 01:14 to 03:44. G.L. Ostrander/Integrity observed the process from a ways downriver at Holcim and later departed for Toledo around 07:00. Her usual route will likely see her make another stop in Cleveland before passing through the Motor City again.
Mesabi Miner was next at Mistersky for fuel, coming in from Monroe at 10:13 and leaving about three hours later for Duluth. CSL Tadoussac had been waiting for her turn below Zug Island and promptly tied up for a drink of her own. She would depart at 16:31 for Superior, around the same time that inbound Victory/Maumee would in turn take the dock from her. The Victory and ex-Reserve would make it three vessels in a row to fuel up and head for Lake Superior when they logged a 19:38 departure for Marquette. Spoiler alert… the streak would later grow to four with a Twin Ports-bound American Century fueling overnight.
Windsor finally received some action upstream and downstream to close out the weekend, with Baie Comeau departing the salt dock upbound at 19:20 and Algoma Compass making her way into Southwestern Sales East on the northernmost part of the river just minutes later. The latter is delivering stone from Calcite. Harvest Spirit is right at home at ADM and stayed at the dock for the balance of the day.

Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
The DEFIANCE – ASHTABULA arrived with sand for CSI on the morning of the 5th at 8:30 AM. They came in for the Gateway Metroport West Dock in Lackawanna, unloaded a partial cargo, and then backed out around 12:00 Noon. After winding in the Outer Harbor Southern Channel, the tug took her barge out to the lake and back in the North Entrance where they met the VERMONT for a tow up to the CSI landing to finish off the second part of the ASHTABULA’S split load. Around 8 PM, the VERMONT came back and towed them down to the Outer Harbor. They winded off the Buffalo Lighthouse and headed for the lake as some rain storms blew in.
