Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
WARNING: Large boatnerd presence in the Twin Ports due to this weekend’s annual LSMMA Gales of November event. These individuals are obsessed with things that float and should be considered highly dangerous. Use caution and avoid the area if possible. If cornered at the canal, use trigger word “Ryerson.” The ensuing discussion should give you enough time to escape.
In the midst of the Gales event, Lake Superior did its part to set the mood with some stormy weather of its own. When Paul R. Tregurtha cleared the Duluth Ship Canal at 11:06 Saturday with 68,000 tons of coal, conditions forced her to take a northerly route along the scenic rocky shoreline. She would be followed closely behind by fleetmate Stewart J. Cort, 13.5 feet the shorter of the two and headed to Burns Harbor with 58,000 tons of Hibtac pellets. Old #1’s Superior departure, clocked in at 12:35, allowed anchored CSL Niagara to proceed inbound from anchor 30 minutes later to take her turn at BNSF Dock 5. Back in Duluth, John G. Munson came in off a restless lake at 15:42 with a rare import cargo of coal. The classic laker had loaded the stuff at South Chicago’s KCBX terminal and is now discharging at Graymont’s seldom-used southern slip. Up next on her schedule will be a shift over to CN Dock 6 to load iron ore pellets. Canada Steamship Lines fleetmates CSL Niagara and Baie Comeau switched places in Allouez Bay just before midnight. The former is off to Nanticoke with 30,000 tons of Keetac pellets, while the latter – anchored off the Superior Entry since midmorning – is currently loading 30,000 tons of Hibtac product for the same destination.
Other lakers in port to begin the weekend included footer Indiana Harbor taking on a load of taconite beneath the shiploader at CN 6. A pair of saltwater visitors are also continuing their stay, Fagelgracht at the port terminal and Federal Katsura at Ash Grove.
