Port Reports – December 7, 2022

Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
Walter J. McCarthy Jr. started off a good Tuesday for Twin Ports traffic with a 01:16 arrival through the Duluth Ship Canal. Junior would proceed down the harbor in the darkness and settle in for the day at CN Dock 6 and a load of taconite pellets. Her fleetmate American Spirit, four feet the longer, would later come in at 08:39 via the Superior Entry. As with most of Spirit’s visits to the lakehead this season, she would tie up at the Enbridge dock with the help of a G-tug to take a delay. The footer is still operating on only one engine due to mechanical problems; it is quite possible the frequent delays are related to this issue. ASC’s flagship had passed Stewart J. Cort at the loading dock on her way in, and the latter would eventually depart just after 10:00 for Burns Harbor. BNSF would once again be occupied by Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader following the pair’s arrival at 12:55. 

The feature of the day would take place during a gentle midafternoon snowfall, with Algoma Innovator coming off the lake and beneath the Aerial Lift Bridge with a delivery of salt from Goderich in a 13:33 matinee. Her destination was Compass Minerals, a straight shot just west of the bridge and right alongside the converted Pier B Resort. She would get to work unloading salt throughout the remainder of the afternoon and into the evening hours.

At 18:03, Paul R. Tregurtha cleared with her weekly coal cargo from Midwest Energy. Her day in the harbor began at 03:00 with a shift from Berth 8 of the port terminal just over to Superior Refining Co. for fuel, eventually followed by another shift at 05:00 over to the SMET loading facility. All 68,000 tons in her hold will be headed to St. Clair this time. Her fleetmate Mesabi Miner did a loop in the lake while awaiting the Queen’s departure and eventually made her own way inbound at 18:44. SMET coal – though only 58,000 tons – would be on her agenda as well.

Two Harbors, MN – Joshua Hebeisen
The Great Lakes Fleet parade continued Tuesday with the departure of Presque Isle for Nanticoke at 10:40 and subsequent arrival of Edgar B. Speer at 11:29. All three of the fleet’s footers have now loaded at the south side of CN 2 in the span of two days. 

Marquette, MI – Oggdo Bogdo
Victory/Maumee showed up at 07:11 wondering where the party went; the heavy traffic to start the week had all dissipated by the time the tug/barge arrived. Nevertheless, with the dock all to themselves, a 10 hour load of ore led to a 17:06 departure, likely for Toledo.

King Company’s tug Matt Allen brought a dredge pipe Tuesday. King will now be working as quickly as possible to set it and get started.

Manistee, MI – Chris Franckowiak
GREAT REPUBLIC arrived Manistee at 10:30 Tuesday morning. MANITOWOC arrived about 20 minutes behind her and followed her up the river. Great Republic discharged coal at Morton Salt, while Manitowoc discharged coal at TES – Filer City. Both ships would depart in the evening. 

Goderich, ON – Bruce Douglas
Algoma Buffalo cleared 23.56 Monday upbound for Thessalon with salt. Flevoborg arrived 07.21 Tuesday loading at elevators.

Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
Monroe, MI: New York/Double Skin 509A is still at the Port and was joined there by Interlake Marine’s Undaunted/Pere Marquette 41. American Century arrived to unload coal at DTE. Undaunted and her barge departed later for Alpena, MI.
Toledo, OH: Caroline McKee/Commander was a late Monday night arrival to unload a partial cargo of cement.  She has since departed for Charlevoix, MI. Other arrivals were Saginaw, Algoma Transport, Samuel deChamplain/Innovation and Michipicoten. Federal St. Laurent departed for Rotterdam. Still in port is the saltie Verila.
Marblehead, OH: Calumet departed for Marine City and American Courage loaded stone and left for Fairport Harbor.
Sandusky, OH: Sam Laud loaded coal and departed for the Soo. Lee A. Tregurtha is under the loader at Norfolk Southern.
Cleveland, OH: Petite Forte/St. Marys Cement is at the Jefferson St. terminal of St. Marys Cement.
Fairport Harbor, OH: CSL’s Frontenac arrived to load at Morton Salt.
Ashtabula, OH: Eeborg of the Royal Wagenborg fleet arrived to unload at the Pinney dock.
Nanticoke, ON: CSL Niagara unloaded at Stelco while Leonard M/Huron Spirit is loading steel coils. Algonorth is at Imperial Oil. Algosea and Algoterra departed for Sarnia and Algoma Hansa is anchored. CSL Niagara departed for Toledo. Chemical tanker Susana S was a late night arrival.

Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
The CSL NIAGARA arrived on the early morning of the 5th at 2:20AM to load coal at the Gateway Metroport Main Dock. They came in the South Entrance and winded off CRH before backing up the Lackawanna slip to the loading apron. She took on 19,000 tons of product there and departed for Long Point Bay at 10:20PM that night. They spent about a day in the Port Dover Anchorage there on account of weather before pulling up the hooks and departing for Sandusky. They were going to top off more coal there and then head for Hamilton when the holds were full.
