Milwaukee, WI – MKE Marine Reports
John D. Leitch arrived at 23:04 Friday with slag from the Stelco Lake Erie Works, Nanticoke. This was delivered to the St. Marys grinding plant at the south end of the mooring basin. Sarah Andrie with tank barge A-397 arrived at 17:19 Saturday with heated liquid asphalt from BP’s Whiting refinery for Construction Resources Management. Barge A-397 is 270 feet long and carries up to 39,700 barrels (about 6,500 metric tons) of asphalt.

Slag is a byproduct of steel production. At the grinding plant, it will be dried and ground to a fine powder. This will be blended with Portland cement to create a concrete product that is stronger and more durable than mixes containing only Portland cement.
