Port Reports – December 24, 2022

Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
Well, there’s a whole lotta boats, but a whole lotta nothin’ as far as traffic goes. Due to the weather conditions on Lake Superior, vessels and their crews are both holed up in port and piled up out in the anchorage, tempting boatnerds by being so close, but yet so far away… 

Movement in the area was scarce, but began midmorning as Arthur M. Anderson shifted from CN-Hallett Dock 5 to the east side of CN Dock 6. Indiana Harbor departed the anchorage for Two Harbors around the same time and was soon replaced on the hook by Great Republic. The latter had loaded ore up at Agate Bay and ceded her dock to Indy. Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader joined the party out in the lake at 22:00 after taking a scenic shoreline cruise along the North Shore.

As of Friday night, the full list of vessels in port included:

  • Joseph L. Block, loading ore at CN Dock 6 West.
  • Arthur M. Anderson, standing by at CN Dock 6 East and next in line at the shiploader.
  • H. Lee White, tied up at Clure Public Marine Terminal Berth 9 waiting to load after the Anderson.
  • John J. Boland, unloading limestone at CN-Hallett Dock 5 and due next across the bay at SMET.
  • American Century, loading coal at SMET.
  • Samuel de Champlain/Innovation, undergoing a five-year survey in the dry dock at Fraser Shipyards.
  • Alpena, unloading powdered cement at Holcim into storage barge J.A.W. Iglehart.
  • Stewart J. Cort, loading Hibtac pellets at BNSF Dock 5.
  • American Integrity, taking a delay at Enbridge and scheduled next at BNSF.

Vessels anchored off port out in the lake included:

  • American Spirit, loaded with ore for Sault Ste. Marie’s Algoma Steel.
  • John G. Munson, next in line for pellets at Two Harbors.
  • Edgar B. Speer, heavy with another load of taconite for Gary.
  • Great Republic, also with ore for Gary.
  • Michipicoten, due next at BNSF after American Integrity.
  • CSL Laurentien, third-in-line for BNSF.
  • Clyde S. VanEnkevort, fourth-in-line for BNSF.

Two Harbors, MN – Joshua Hebeisen
Great Republic departed at 10:11 to anchor off Duluth, switching places with the inbound Indiana Harbor.

Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
No boats are sailing on Lake Erie as of Friday night due to extremely high winds. Waves are as high as 25 feet. Temperatures are as low as -4F with wind chills of -30F.

Cedar Point, OH: At anchor in the lee of Cedar Point are Evans Spirit, Algoma Intrepid, Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder, Florence Spirit, Dirk S. VanEnkevort/Michigan Trader, Mark W. Barker, CSL Tadoussac, CSL Niagara, Algoma Mariner and the saltie Jamno of the Polsteam fleet.
Cleveland, OH: Staying in port are Calumet, Leonard M/Huron Spirit and American Courage.
Nanticoke, OH: Algonova and  Algocanada are at anchor along with Algoma Sault and Frontenac.
