Marquette Report for January 2nd: Ship traffic in and out of Marquette has been quite busy. Since my last report, the Menominee, Maumee, Lee A. Tregurtha, Herbert C. Jackson all made visits to the ore dock. Currently, the Kaye E. Barker and the Hon James L. Oberstar are enroute to Marquette and should arrive early Tuesday.
Alpena, MI – Jason Luther
The end of the year and the beginning of 2023 was a busy time for Alpena. Early on New Year’s Eve saw the arrival of the John J. Boland from Monroe to unload pet coke at Lafarge. Departure was 18:45 for Chicago. In from Sault Ste Marie, late in the afternoon, was the very infrequent visitor Dorothy Ann/ Pathfinder, and hot on her heels was Undaunted/Pere Marquette, both unloading at LaFarge. DA/P departed for Meldrom Bay at 2:35 after the new year, and U/PM cast off for Muskegon at 7:29 this morning. Not to be out done was another ATB and frequent visitor Samuel De Champlain with barge Innovation arriving at 6:36, and departing for St. Joseph just after noon.
Goderich, ON – Bruce Douglas
Saginaw arrived 14.36 Sunday unloading at elevators. Once unloaded she’ll head upbound for Thunder Bay for another load of grain. First lake boat into Goderich for 2023.
Milwaukee, WI – MKE Marine Reports
As 2022 came to a close, Milwaukee saw two old veterans. Prentiss Brown/St. Marys Challenger arrived Tuesday with cement for the Kinnickinnic River terminal. The pair cleared for Charlevoix Friday morning. Alpena arrived from Alpena at 08:45 Saturday with cement for Lafarge.

After repairs to her rudder at Nicholson’s in Detroit, Mark W. Barker arrived at Monroe to load.
Lake Erie Ports Jan. 2 – Bill Kloss
Monroe, MI: Leonard M/Huron Spirit unloaded steel coils then departed for Sault Ste. Marie,ON.
Sandusky, OH: John D. Leitch loaded coal for Clarkson, ON, departing in the late afternoon.
Cleveland, OH: American Mariner weighed anchor and went to the Bulk Terminal. She unloaded 28,000 tons of pellets from the Tilden mine. After unloading she departed for Ashtabula. Next to arrive was the tug and barge New York/Double Skin 509A anchoring in Lake Erie, followed by the tug/barge Olive L. Moore/Menominee, unloading at the Bulk Terminal. American Courage is still running the shuttles.
Fairport Harbor, OH: CSL Tadoussac is loading salt for Toronto.
Ashtabula, OH: American Mariner
Conneaut, OH: Walter J. McCarthy, Jr. arrived to unload ore at the P&C Dock.
Nanticoke, OH: Arrivals were Algoterra, joining Algonova at Imperial Oil and Presque Isle with ore for Stelco. Rt. Hon. Paul J. Martin departed for Superior, WI.
Lake Erie Ports Jan. 1 – Bill Kloss
Monroe, MI: Mesabi Miner left for Duluth once she emptied at DTE. Leonard M/Huron Spirit was a late night arrival to unload steel coils.
Sandusky, OH: Manitoulin loaded coal at Norfolk Southern and departed for Algoma Steel at the Soo. John D. Leitch moved up to the loader after waiting behind Manitoulin.
Cleveland, OH: American Mariner is anchored in Lake Erie and fleetmate American Courage is loading a shuttle at the Bulk Terminal. The cement carrier Petite Forte/St. Marys Cement departed for Bowmanville, ON once empty.
Fairport Harbor, OH: CSL Tadoussac is loading at Morton.
Ashtabula, OH: Laura L. VanEnkevort/Joseph H.Thompson unloaded stone and then left for a return to Marblehead.
Nanticoke, OH: Rt. Hon. Paul J. Martin is unloading coal at Stelco and Algonova is loading at Imperial Oil.
