Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
American Century started off the weekend by both coming over and back over the horizon in the span of just a few hours. Arriving at 01:20 for an anchorage berth while waiting for Philip R. Clarke to load in Two Harbors, the Century was already back on the road by 03:45. Perhaps it was all just an excuse to hang out with fleetmate American Spirit off the piers, currently on the hook and expected to head to Elevator M in the coming days to begin her winter lay-up. Mesabi Miner followed her fellow footer off into the distance after clearing the Duluth Ship Canal at 04:04. Bound for Toledo with pellets from CN 6, her departure allowed Walter J. McCarthy Jr. to shift over to the dock from the port terminal.
Algoma Innovator was the first vessel to actually arrive the harbor on Saturday, coming in via the Minnesota side at 06:00 sharp before sailing into Wisconsin waters for Envirotech-Hallett Dock 8. Her cargo of salt hails from Goderich and may be the last the Twin Ports receives before the long winter ahead. Sticking in Superior, Paul J. Martin and her pair of accolades headed outbound the Superior Entry just before noon with a destination of Nanticoke. Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader were inbound a short time later, having been waiting in the anchorage since about 07:30 on the 6th.
16:00 saw James R. Barker join American Spirit on the hook, giving her a front-row seat for fleetmate Paul R. Tregurtha’s arrival for SMET approximately 15 minutes later. JRB is waiting for the McCarthy to wrap things up at CN. Algoma Innovator departed at 18:45 for a return trip to Goderich, and Burns Harbor joined the party in the anchorage at 22:30. Mark W. Barker remains at the port terminal unloading steel bars, the Sam Hankinson Special (trademark pending).
Two Harbors, MN – Joshua Hebeisen
Philip R. Clarke steamed out gracefully for Gary at 04:38. Successor American Century arrived out of breath an hour later after running up from Duluth.
Marquette, MI – Noah H.
The veteran Lee A. Tregurtha made another regular arrival at 07:44, saddling up next to the still-loading Wilfred Sykes. It would be early evening for the next bit of traffic, which was the Hon. James L. Oberstar anchoring outside at 17:39. She would take the place of the Sykes as the steamer headed off to Indiana Harbor at 20:58.
Alpena, MI – Jason Luther
Today was a banner day for the LaFarge/Holcim cement hauling fleet, seeing all three vessels in port on the same day. The Steamer Alpena cast off across Lake Huron for Whitefish Bay at 1:46 this morning. ATB Samuel De Champlain/Innovation arrived later this morning with a quick in-and-out for Detroit, departing at 12:59 this early afternoon. Hot on her heels was the sister ATB G.L. Ostrander/ Integrity arriving from Sault Ste Marie at 13:40.
Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
Marblehead, OH: Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder returned for another stone load, which she loaded and left for a delivery to Cleveland.
Sandusky, OH: American Courage left with coal for Algoma Steel at the Soo. Interlake’s Kaye E. Barker arrived mid afternoon to load coal at Norfolk Southern.
Lorain, OH: Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder unloaded at Holcim and departed for a return to Marblehead.
Cleveland, OH: Manitowoc arrived with 28,000 tons of pellets from the Tilden mine to unload at the Bulk Terminal. Joyce L. VanEnkevort/Great Lakes Trader (CBT-UTAC 33t). Sam Laud is now on the shuttles.
Nanticoke, OH: Arthur M. Anderson unloaded at Stelco and departed for Two Harbors, MN. Algosea also left, headed to fuel at Misterskys in Detroit. John D. Leitch arrived at Steco.
