St. Marys River – U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District
The tug/barge Ashtabula/Defiance closed out the 2022-2023 navigation season carrying the season’s final load through the Soo Locks Monday morning. She is headed for Burns Harbor, Indiana with 24,680 long tons of taconite.
Sturgeon Bay, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
Joyce L. VanEnkevort/Great Lakes Trader were the latest additions to the winter fleet, arriving at 19:33 to tie up for the season at Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding. Walter J. McCarthy Jr. went to anchor around 15:45 in the western bay area and should be arriving soon.
Other vessels already tucked away for the season include Walter J. McCarthy Jr., Wilfred Sykes, Edwin H. Gott, Mesabi Miner, and Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader. Cason J. Callaway remains at the yard in long-term lay-up.
Detroit, MI – Windsor, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Dirk S. VanEnkevort/Michigan Trader had the Rouge River to herself in the wee hours of Monday morning, slithering up to Cleveland-Cliffs Dearborn Works with a load of taconite pellets from Marquette, MI. The pair would later back out and depart empty at 18:54, due next in Cleveland, OH. New York/Double Skin 509A were inbound from The Land at 22:56 and went to Nicholson Detroit to load. Across the river in Windsor, CCGS Samuel Risley moored alongside the Dieppe Gardens after returning from Sarnia, ON. Manitoulin spent the day at ADM.
Vessels in lay-up at Detroit include Hon. James L. Oberstar at Nicholson Ecorse. Fleetmates Florence Spirit and Harvest Spirit are across international lines at Morterm.
Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
Toledo, OH: Great Republic, Philip R. Clarke and Manitowoc arrived for layup. Leonard M/Huron Spirit unloaded steel coils and departed for Cleveland. Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder is at CSX. Joseph L. Block arrived late Monday night with ore for Torco.
Cleveland, OH: Alpena arrived to deliver to Holcim Cement. She departed for Alpena, MI once empty. James R. Barker remains anchored along with Olive L. Moore/Menominee. Mark W. Barker moved from the Port dock to Cargill to load salt. Sam Laud and American Courage are both running shuttles to Cliffs. New York/Double Skin 509A unloaded and left for Detroit, MI. Leonard M/ Huron Spirit arrived to unload steel coils at the Port, dock 24W.
Conneaut, OH: Finished unloading, Philip R. Clarke departed for Toledo. Arthur M. Anderson was next in line to unload at the P&C Dock. Once empty, she left for Toledo as well.
Buffalo, NY: Manitowoc departed for layup.
Nanticoke, OH: Algonova and Algoterra are loading at Imperial Oil.
Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
Manitowoc was all set by 21:00 and backed out for the lake by herself, bound for Toledo.
