Silver Bay, MN – Joshua Hebeisen
With Monday’s announcement that Cleveland-Cliffs Northshore Mining will be resuming operations in April, we can likely expect a more consistent flow of vessel traffic through Silver Bay this year. Last season saw nearly all visitors loading off the stockpile. Stay tuned for more updates as the season draws closer. In the meantime, you can read the full press release in today’s Boatnerd News.
Calumet Harbor, IL – Joshua Hebeisen
Algoma Conveyor finished discharging salt at the Chicago export dock in the wee hours of the morning, casting off at 02:00 to begin a 2-hour journey backing up the cold Calumet River — and you thought your Monday morning commute was bad! Well, at least she had a tug assist courtesy of Massachusetts. Clearing the breakwall at 03:58, the Conveyor set course up the western shore of Lake Michigan for her next port (likely Goderich, ON, and more salt).
Cheboygan, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Algocanada arrived at 12:45 with another load of petroleum products for U.S. Oil. With watchful USCGC Mackinaw back at her berth, the tanker made sure to obey the speed limit on her short trip to the dock.
Port Huron, MI – Sarnia, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Monday’s traffic was over less than 30 minutes into the morning, with Iver Bright clearing Suncor for Monroe, MI, at 00:19.
Detroit, MI – Windsor, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Algoma Innovator got the work week started with a 00:05 arrival in the Motor City. Alongside G-tug friends Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, the self-unloader headed up the River Rouge for what appeared to be the Motor City Materials dock, all set to receive her load of salt from Goderich, ON.
Later in the morning, CCGS Griffon cast off from Windsor’s Dieppe Gardens and set course for Amherstburg, ON, at 10:30. Between breaking ice and hunting for UFOs, it’s been quite the week for the veteran cutter — she’ll take a much-deserved break at her Coast Guard station.
Across the river, the Innovator had already backed her way out of the Rouge and was tying up just south of Mistersky. She officially left port at 18:33 for another load of Goderich salt.
