St. Marys River – Joshua Hebeisen
Leonard M/Huron Spirit entered the St. Marys River at around 06:30 Monday morning, only to stop for about an hour just inside the confines of DeTour Village, MI. Ice remains the likely culprit, though it’s possible Leonard paused to switch pushing/towing configurations — or, of course, stopped at the DeTour Village Inn for the breakfast special. Depending on which version you prefer, USCGC Mobile Bay either smelled the hashbrowns from upriver and sped her way down or ventured south to assist the tug/barge through the ice.
The little convoy spent the rest of the morning and early afternoon slowly proceeding upbound, eventually reaching the Soo a little after 14:00. Her work done, Mobile Bay softened up the waters near the locks before sailing back down the river to Lime Island; Leonard M pushed Huron Spirit up to Purvis Marine. The pair is expected to load coils from Algoma Steel.
Milwaukee, WI – MKE Marine Reports
Algonova arrived at 07:13 Sunday with gasoline from the Imperial Oil Refinery in Nanticoke for U.S. Oil’s Jones Island terminal. After discharging about 2.95 million gallons at the city’s Liquid Cargo Pier, she cleared for Sarnia at 01:57 Monday. This was the third delivery of Canadian petroleum products this year. Algoma Conveyor arrived at 17:36 Sunday with salt from Compass Minerals, Goderich. After delivering part of her cargo at the Kinder Morgan bagging plant, she moved to south slip one and dropped deicing salt on the open dock. Conveyor departed at 16:39.
Goderich, ON – Bruce Douglas
Algoma Conveyor cleared 09:27 Saturday upbound for Milwaukee with salt. Icebreaker-tug Judy LaMarsh arrived 14:01 Saturday and broke ice in the channel. Tied up South pier overnight, cleared 07:19 Sunday downbound for Amherstburg, ON. Algoma Innovator due next for salt.
Port Huron, MI – Sarnia, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Iver Bright returned from Detroit, MI, at 12:14, taking up her usual spot at Suncor. Algosea was also inbound from the downbound direction later in the afternoon, arriving Imperial Oil around 16:30 with a load of petroleum products from Nanticoke, ON. She joins fleetmate Algoterra at the lower dock. Local tug Welland assisted both tankers on their Monday arrivals.
Detroit, MI – Windsor, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Iver Bright bid farewell to the Motor City at 07:30, leaving her berth at the Mistersky Fuel Dock for the short return voyage to Sarnia, ON. Just under an hour later, tug Leo A. McArthur and her liquid asphalt barge John J. Carrick left their lay-up berth near Windsor’s Sterling Fuels and headed across the Detroit River to sail up the Rouge. The pair appeared to set up shop at Marathon. Later in the evening, USCGC Morro Bay arrived from Cleveland, OH, and tied up for the night near the Renaissance Center.
Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
Activity is picking up on Lake Erie. Algoma Tankers Algosea departed with petroleum products for Sarnia, while McKeil’s Harvest Spirit departed Stelco with steel coils for Cleveland. She arrived at the Port of Cleveland Dock 24W at 06:20. Interlake’s Dorothy Ann Pathfinder is running the shuttles from Cleveland Bulk Terminal to the Cliffs mill on the Cuyahoga River. Departing Cleveland was the Coast Guard cutter Morro Bay, headed west to Detroit. Towards the eastern end of Lake Erie, Malcolm Marine tug Manitou arrived in Erie, PA early Monday morning.
