Port Reports – April 3, 2023

Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Scott Bjorklund
Duluth Entry
Traffic slowed a bit over the weekend due to high winds on the lake! Due to the backup at Burlington Northern, Baie Comeau switched orders and arrived at 12:38 Friday afternoon to load iron ore pellets at CN#6; after a long load, they finally left at 08:15 with iron ore for Nanticoke. Meanwhile, Algoma Transport arrived Saturday morning at 08:04 to load petroleum coke at SMET; they departed at 21:37 Saturday night for Three Rivers, Quebec. Indiana Harbor arrived 02:44 early Sunday morning to fuel before loading in Two Harbors; they left at 12:15. After the Comeau left Sunday morning, the CSL Niagara was able to come in to load at CN at 08:51. As of Sunday evening, CSL Niagara was loading at CN and Federal Dart was still unloading at Ash Grove.

Paul R. Tregurtha is expected later Sunday night to load low sulfur coal at SMET. CSL Niagara is estimated to depart either late Sunday night or early Monday morning with iron ore pellets; CSL Assiniboine should arrive to load once they depart. Paul R. Tregurtha is estimated to depart later Monday morning with low sulfur coal. Federal Dart may leave sometime Monday evening empty for Thunder Bay.

Superior Entry
American Century departed Superior Friday morning around 07:07 with iron ore pellets for Burns Harbor, Indiana. Dirk S. VanEnkevort then arrived with barge Michigan Trader at 07:28 that morning; due to weather, they didn’t leave until Saturday morning at 04:24 for Burns Harbor. Oakglen was next, arriving at 08:55 to load at BNSF. They departed at 03:03 Sunday morning for Quebec City. CSL Tadoussac then arrived at 03:26 to load for Nanticoke. As of Sunday evening, CSL Tadoussac was preparing to depart with iron ore pellets while Burns Harbor stood by to take their place. American Spirit was also in Superior, still winter at Elevator M.

Knowing the Burns Harbor, and how slow things have been at the ore docks lately, they probably won’t depart until later Monday. Next up, will be the Algoma Intrepid.

Two Harbors, MN – Gary Putney
The John G. Munson departed Two Harbors for Gary. The Saginaw loaded after the  Munson. The Saginaw loaded for Algoma at the Soo Canada. At 10:30 the Indiana Harbor is loading.

Thunder Bay, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
A short and sweet day in Thunder Bay saw G3 Marquis arrive for Richardson Main at 06:49. The end!

Marquette, MI – Anonymous
Sam Laud arrived at 00:40 after camping out in eastern Lake Superior for a few days to wait out the weather. It’s the Laud’s first arrival since July 30, 2021, making her the rarest visitor of the young season thus far. Hot on her heels was Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader. The two vessels had been in close proximity up the St. Marys river and while they were waiting at anchor. The tug/barge duo did not arrive on Sunday, however, despite the Lee A. Tregurtha finally vacating her spot at the dock at 06:39. It appears they will wait for the Laud to finish. As for future traffic, another slew of Interlake classics awaits; the Herbert C. Jackson will be next up, followed by the Kaye E. Barker and Hon. James L. Oberstar. It’s been an even spread of Interlake vessels to begin the season.

St. Joseph – Benton Harbor, MI – Michael Moran
Dredging of the outer harbor is scheduled to begin on or around the 10th of April.

Goderich, ON – Bruce Douglas
Algoma Compass cleared 16:02 Saturday upbound for Milwaukee with salt. Michipicoten arrived 07:21 Sunday and is at the elevators.

Detroit, MI – Windsor, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Flashy Iver Bright arrived from Sarnia, ON’s Suncor dock at 08:23 with another load of product for the Rouge. Following a quick trip up to Marathon, the tiny tanker would spend the rest of her day at the dock. At 15:44, a pair of downbound classics would split up to occupy opposite sides of the Detroit River. Interlake’s Kaye E. Barker would make an hour-long pit stop at Nicholson Detroit, while CSL’s Frontenac paid a visit to Sterling Fuels to fill up on gas. The Barker cast off just an hour later to make the short trip up the Rouge to the Dearborn Works. Fronty, on her part, got going at 18:45 for the longer journey to Port Colborne, ON. Algoma Conveyor and Egbert Wagenborg are still hanging out in Windsor at ADM and Morterm, respectively.

Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
Monroe, MI: New York/Double Skin 509A is still unloading liquid asphalt.
Cleveland, OH: James R. Barker delivered 56,000 tons of UTAC pellets to the Bulk Terminal. Once empty, she left for Duluth/Superior. Petite Forte/St. Marys Cement finished unloading and departed for Bath, ON. Sea Eagle II/St. Marys Cement II brought in Cement for the St. Marys Jefferson St. terminal. Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder arrived from Fairport Harbor and tied up at Lehigh Cement, waiting for Laura L. VanEnkevort/Joseph H. Thompson. The VanEnkevort combo arrived late in the evening, bringing 20,000 tons of UTAC pellets for the Bulk Terminal.
Fairport Harbor, OH: After unloading at Osborne, Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder departed for Cleveland.
Conneaut, OH: American Integrity arrived to unload ore at the P&C dock.
Nanticoke, ON: Paul A. Desgagnes and Algonova are loading at Imperial Oil. Sarah Desgagnes is anchored off of Port Dover.
