Two Harbors, MN – Gary Putney
Presque Isle arrived Two Harbors on 4/8 for the shiploader at 07:56. The John G. Munson was supposed to be the next boat but she is now heading for Duluth. The next boat scheduled for Two Harbors is the CSL Laurentien that is currently off Copper Harbor at 19:45.
Thunder Bay, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Manitoulin sailed in past the northern breakwater at 03:45 Saturday morning, tying up at Richardson Main to load grain for Buffalo, NY. She was back on her way down the lake at 17:24. Farther down the bay, Viterra A soon received an evening customer as CSL Welland made port around 18:20. The muraled marvel will be taking on a cargo for Montreal, QC.
Atlantic Huron spent another day at Keefer Terminal due to mechanical issues, reportedly problems with her controllable-pitch propellor. Rumors suggest she may soon head into dry dock at nearby Heddle Shipyards. Federal Dart, the port’s first saltie of the season, is loading at P&H to the south.
Stoneport, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Just a few days after opening the quarry, Stoneport is already backed up with vessels eager to get their first taste of stone for the season. Rt. Hon. Paul J. Martin spent the day at the dock before clearing for Windsor, ON, at 22:45; Sam Laud was inbound from the anchorage to take her turn next. Fleetmates Mark W. Barker and Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder went on the hook late morning and early evening, respectively.
Courtright, ON – Rod Burdick
Tug/Barge Sharon M I/Huron Spirit opened the Courtright brine dock, on the St. Clair River, for the 2023 shipping season on April 8 loading for Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
Detroit, MI – Windsor, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Saturday yielded a basketful of sweet traffic for Motor City folks on a boat hunt. Just after 05:00, saltie Egbert Wagenborg began the bunny hop across the pond to Liverpool, Great Britain, with a cargo of spring wheat from ADM. Golden egg Wilfred Sykes was inbound from Cleveland, OH, at 06:32 for a nice Mistersky meal, the sweet, steamy smell of spring in the air as she cruised up the river. 1959-built Herbert C. Jackson — no spring chick herself — departed Dearborn for Sandusky, OH, about 2 hours later after unloading some taconite treats overnight. Finished hiding cement at Holcim, G.L. Ostrander/Integrity bounded down behind the classic at 10:57. Sykes was also outbound for Calcite, MI, in the meantime, and Harvest Spirit pulled up to ADM after dinner. With her steel shell painted red and iron candy inside, Kaye E. Barker made port at 21:38 as a delicious Detroit dessert. Hopefully she doesn’t hatch!
Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
Toledo, OH: CSL Niagara is loading at CSX.
Sandusky, OH: Arriving from Detroit to load coal at Norfolk Southern was Interlake’s Herbert C. Jackson.
Lorain, OH: Laura L. VanEnkevort/Joseph H. Thompson was a late night arrival to unload at the Holcim stone dock.
Cleveland, OH: Finished running shuttles, Wilfred Sykes departed for Calcite, MI. She caused quite a stir among local boatnerds during her stay in Cleveland. American Courage has taken over running the shuttles. Polsteam’s Isadora departed for Portage, IN. Sea Eagle II/St. Marys Cement II is still unloading. The tug ST 911 departed for Ashtabula.
Ashtabula, OH: ST 911 arrived from Cleveland.
Nanticoke, ON: Mia Desgagnes arrived to load at Imperial Oil.
