Two Harbors, MN – Silver Bay, MN – Gary Putney
The Edwin H. Gott departed Two Harbors on 4/25 at 10:33 for Gary Works. The Arthur M. Anderson arrived Two Harbors on 4/25 at 11:09 after having been stopped in the Lake. I don’t know any times on the Walter J. McCarthy Jr., but at 19:30 on the 25th she was headed for Two Harbors. She had been tied up at one of the docks in East Superior. I have no inbound time into Silver Bay on the Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader, but she did depart on the 25th at 08:18 for Toledo.
Marquette, MI – Noah H.
Hon. James L. Oberstar arrived at 04:08, joining the Dirk S. VanEnkevort/Michigan Trader. The latter would leave at 08:31, only to loop back around and arrive again at 10:44. It’s unclear exactly what happened here. At any rate, the Oberstar opted for a more traditional departure at 12:14. She is headed to Detroit. Her fleet mate Lee A. Tregurtha would replace her at the dock a few hours later at 17:11, joining the Dirk.
Sault Ste. Marie, MI – U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District
The MacArthur Lock at the Soo Locks officially opened for the navigation season on Monday, April 24. The first ship through was the Great Republic. While the MacArthur Lock was shut down for winter maintenance, Corps of Engineers Soo Locks crews completed tainter valve repairs, installed encoders, replaced fender timbers on the piers and performed inspections and preventative maintenance on electrical and mechanical systems.
Milwaukee, WI – MKE Marine Reports
The Norwegian tanker Sten Aurora arrived from Sarnia at 20:42 Monday and tied up at the Liquid Cargo Pier. She departed Amsterdam, a major international hub for gasoline, March 28 and stopped at Sarnia before coming to Milwaukee. Federal Churchill was still unloading steel coils at Federal Marine Terminals.
The last overseas tanker to visit Milwaukee was the Carolus Magnus in August 2019, which loaded 40,000 barrels (1,680,000 gallons) of ethanol at Milwaukee after taking 50,000 barrels (2,100,000 gallons) at Green Bay. Built in 2007, Sten Aurora is 473 feet long by 76 feet wide, and could carry up to 116,000 barrels (4,872,000 gallons) of ethanol.
Muskegon, MI – Noah H.
There was substantially less drama on Tuesday, with a grand total of zero (0) groundings. The Kaye E. Barker finished the rest of her stone unload and was gone by 09:43, destined for Marquette next. She was followed closely by the rare visitor Algoma Buffalo at 10:08, headed for Stoneport.
Essexville, MI – Todd Shorkey
G.L. Ostrander/Integrity was inbound on the Saginaw River on a rainy morning Saturday, April 22. The pair called on the Holcim Cement Dock in Essexville to unload, and became the first repeat visitor to the Saginaw River this season.
Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
Toledo, OH: Arrivals were CSL Niagara, Cuyahoga and Federal Seto. In port are Joyce L. VanEnkevort/Great Lakes Trader at Ironville and Manitoulin at Kuhlman’s. Departing was G.L Ostrander/Integrity for Essexville.
Sandusky, OH: Herbert C. Jackson loaded coal for Zug Island and Victory/Maumee loaded coal for Sault Ste. Marie. Algoma Conveyor remains anchored in Lake Erie.
Lorain, OH: John J. Boland is having some maintenance work done.
Cleveland, OH: Arrivals were Prentiss Brown/St.Marys Challenger with cement for St. Marys Columbus St. terminal, USCGC Mackinaw to the Port, dock 28W and Joseph L. Block with 32,000 tons of UTAC pellets for the Bulk Terminal. After unloading at Holcim, Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder moved back up the Cuyahoga River to the old channel to load salt at Cargill. A lengthy departure list included Prentiss Brown/St.Marys Challenger to Toledo, Sam Laud to Marblehead, Solina for Burns Harbor, Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder with salt for Detroit, Joseph L. Block to Port Inland and NACC Alicudi to Hamilton, ON.
Fairport Harbor, OH: CSL Tadoussac departed with salt for Toronto.
Conneaut, OH: H. Lee White left in ballast for Cedarville.
Buffalo, NY: Algoma Innovator departed for Goderich, ON. Arriving was Radcliffe R. Latimer to load coal.
Nanticoke, ON: Algocanada departed with petroleum products for Sept-Iles, PQ. Algosea is loading at Imperial Oil.
Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
The 740-foot, forward boom self-unloader Algoma Innovator arrived at 14:30 on the 24th of April with a load of salt from Goderich for Lackawanna. She came straight in without tugs and slowly eased up the Lackawanna Canal for the Compass Minerals storage dome at the extreme South end of the Main Dock. The Innovator was done unloading around midnight and backed out from Lackawanna by herself to the Outer Harbor. She winded with the thrusters and departed via the South Entrance, bound for Goderich to load more salt.
The Radcliffe R. Latimer arrived off Buffalo for Lackawanna at 05:00 on the 25th. They had been holding at Wharf 16 in Port Colborne waiting for the Innovator to depart before heading over. The Latimer came in, turned up the Outer Harbor, and backed into the Gateway Metroport Main Dock for the bulk loading apron. Once tied up she began taking on a load of coal via portable conveyors. Right behind them was the tug-barge combo New York-DS509A with a load of hot asphalt for the Suite Kote pier in Tonawanda. They came in without assistance, switched out of tow gear in the Outer Harbor near the Erie Basin, “notched up”, and then made their way down the Black Rock Canal. The New York winded her barge above the South Grand Island bridges and secured at Suite Kote at 10:25.
