Due to a death in his family, the volunteer compiling the port reports has had to take a few days off. He promises the reports will return soon.

 

U.P. town builds $5M pier big enough for cruise ships

HOUGHTON, MI – A small Upper Peninsula town has a new $5 million pier that’s equipped to dock cruise ships, which are becoming increasingly popular on the Great Lakes.

The 2023 cruise ship season is expected to be record-breaking with 11 ships making hundreds of stops at Michigan ports, including a couple at Houghton.

Houghton, located along the Keweenaw Waterway in the Keweenaw Peninsula, opened its pier during fall 2022, said Houghton City Manager Eric Waara. It serves as the city’s town square and event space but with its size, deep water and a few extra elements, it has the added function of being a cruise ship dock.
