Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Scott Bjorklund
Duluth Entry
Friday’s traffic started with H. Lee White, which arrived at 03:42 (Central) to unload limestone at Graymont. Joseph L. Block departed at 05:10 empty for Marquette. H. Lee White departed through Duluth at 22:50 with petroleum coke for Thorold. Indiana Harbor arrived under the northern lights at 02:41 Saturday morning for CN#6. American Integrity arrived at 14:07 to load low sulfur coal at SMET, and James R. Barker arrived an hour later at 15:15 for a quick stop at Port Terminal; Jame R. Barker departed a few hours later at 18:54 to wait at anchor outside Duluth. Philip R. Clarke arrived at 01:49 Sunday morning with limestone for C. Reiss. American Integrity departed at 03:54 with low sulfur coal for St. Clair, and Indiana Harbor departed an hour later at 05:01 with iron ore pellets for Cleveland. James R. Barker was able to arrive from anchor 05:52 to load next at CN. Edwin H. Gott arrived at 14:23 to wait at Port Terminal for space at CN. Finally, Philip R. Clarke departed at 19:31 Sunday night
As of Sunday night, James R. Barker was loading at CN#6, while Edwin H. Gott waited at Port Terminal. Monday looks to be quite busy! James R. Barker is estimated to depart sometime Monday morning with iron ore pellets. Algoma Discovery is expected early Monday morning, but will probably anchor due to the back up. Hon. James L. Oberstar should also be arriving early in the morning, but they will be unloading limestone at CN-Hallett #5. Arthur M. Anderson is due mid-morning to also unload at CN-Hallett #5; they may have to wait depending on space, but the Oberstar should be departing later in the morning. American Century will be arriving early afternoon to load coal at SMET.
Superior Entry
Algoma Sault arrived in Superior at 12:22 (Central) Friday afternoon to load iron ore pellets at BNSF#5. After they departed at 02:08 Saturday morning, Oakglen arrived at 02:32 to take their place at BNSF. Oakglen departed at 22:06 Saturday night with iron ore for Quebec City. Joyce L. VanEnkevort loaded next, arriving at 22:28 to load at BNSF. Joyce L. VanEnkevort departed at 12:08 Sunday afternoon with iron ore for Toledo. Michipicoten made their first visit to BNSF for the season arriving at 12:33 then departing at 17:54 for Sault Ste. Marie.
As of Sunday night, the Boland was the only vessel in port on the Superior side (still at Fraser, but is expected to load iron ore pellets at CN soon). Stewart J. Cort will be the next arrival for Superior, most likely entering the port early Tuesday.
Two Harbors, MN – Gary Putney
Paul R. Tregurtha arrived Two Harbors at 07:36 on the 19th and departed at 08:04 the following morning for Indiana Harbor. The John G. Munson arrived on the 20th at 13:58 and departed at 22:19 that night for Indiana Harbor.
Sturgeon Bay, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
Just one trip into her season, it appears that Edgar B. Speer is already headed back to the shop. The footer wintered in Toledo, OH, to undergo extensive engine repairs, fitting out a little over a week ago for Two Harbors, MN, and her typical load of taconite. After unloading in Gary, IN, the vessel was making less than 10 knots northbound on Lake Michigan. She eventually set her destination for Sturgeon Bay and arrived to anchor off the western entrance late Sunday afternoon. Shoreside reports indicate she is due to arrive Bay Shipbuilding Monday morning to undergo repairs.
Milwaukee, WI – MKE Marine Reports
Prentiss Brown/St. Marys Conquest arrived from Charlevoix at 18:52 Saturday with cement for the Kinnickinnic River terminal. The pair headed back to Charlevoix at 08:27 Sunday. Mark W. Barker arrived at 12:58 Sunday with about 18,000 metric tons of deicing salt from Cargill’s Cleveland mine. With G-Tug Hawaii standing by, she proceeded to the inner harbor and dropped her load on the Cargill salt pad.
Saginaw River, MI – Todd Shorkey
Cuyahoga arrived on the river with a split load, delivering to the Saginaw Asphalt/Buena Vista Dock and to the GM Dock.
Windsor, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Hapag Lloyd’s expedition-class cruise ship Hanseatic Inspiration has finally made her Detroit River debut after 3 years of waiting. Completed in 2019, the new liner was scheduled to visit all five Great Lakes in 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic put those plans on hold. Her name was called again in 2023, and the Inspiration certainly didn’t disappoint this weekend with a 07:00 arrival at the Dieppe Gardens Sunday morning. The impressive Maltese-flagged vessel would depart 12 hours later heading north for picturesque Tobermory, ON.
Hanseatic Inspiration joins fellow cruise ships Viking Octantis, Ocean Navigator, and Ocean Voyager currently sailing the lakes, with more to come in the summer months ahead.
Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
May 21
Toledo, OH: Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader brought in ore for Ironville.
Marblehead, OH: Calumet loaded stone and left for Marysville. Next to load was Manitoulin.
Cleveland, OH: Departing Cleveland were Mesabi Miner to Duluth, McKeil Spirit to Picton, ON and UAL Fortitude is sailing to Antwerp, Belgium. Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder had a split delivery to RiverDock and Holcim West 3rd St. Arriving at 08:11 was Samuel de Champlain/Innovation with cement for Holcim. She departed in the evening for Alpena. A late night arrival was Royal Wagenborg’s Edenborg to the Port docks.
Nanticoke, ON: CSL Niagara arrived to unload ore at Stelco.
Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
The NACC Alicudi was towed up the Buffalo River stern first by the tug Vermont to Holcim Cement at 14:00 Sunday. The American Mariner was seen unloading all day at the Frontier Elevator.
