Marquette, MI – Arthur Pickering
It’s been a steady week of vessel traffic in and out of Marquette’s harbors. Earlier this week, the Herbert Jackson and Hon. James Oberstar visited the ore dock in the upper harbor. In addition, the Kaye Barker visited both the lower harbor to deliver limestone before going to the upper harbor for a load of ore. Currently, the Maumee is at the ore dock loading ore and the Lee Tregurtha is enroute and should arrive in the next couple hours. The Great Lakes Trader is scheduled for a late afternoon arrival tomorrow while the Hon. James Oberstar is scheduled for an early afternoon arrival on Monday.
Thunder Bay, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
In a sure sign of summer on Lake Superior’s northernmost coast, the first cruise ship of the season arrived Thunder Bay in the impressive form of 673-foot long, 77-foot wide Viking Octantis. This is the first of several scheduled visits for the Octantis this summer after her inaugural series of Great Lakes cruises in 2022.
In other Thursday traffic, Federal Cedar departed P&H at 17:44 for Hamburg, Germany. Fraserborg would shift from the Midcontinent Terminal to the newly vacated elevator later in the evening. Navibulgar’s Oborishte arrived for Viterra A shortly before midnight. Remaining in place for the day was Federal Champlain at MobilEx and Iryda in the anchorage.
Of note, the sailing vessel Frodo departed midmorning, making One Ring out in the lake before returning to the Middle-Harbor in time for second breakfast. A pretty quick trip There and Back Again (no Eagles required).

Kingsville, ON – Michael Chase
What started as a normal tow was anything but.
Like a wild horse not wanting to be corralled, the Cuyahoga ran aground while being towed by the tugs Stormont and Ecosse into Kingsville Harbour.
Between the crosswinds and the sandbar, the tugs were hard at work for hours working to free her. It would appear that this was approximately the same area where the Mississagi also ran aground a couple of years ago.
She was freed as of late Thursday night and was getting positioned for docking while the local Fire Department Officials were getting ready to board and inspect her.
