Two Harbors, MN – Gary Putney
Edgar B. Speer arrived Two Harbors at 05:10 and departed at 22:18 for the Gary Works. The American Integrity arrived Two Harbors 03:19. The Great Republic went to anchorage off Two Harbors. Edwin H. Gott is upbound in Lake Superior for Two Harbors.
Thunder Bay, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
The oldest vessel in port* being just 16 years old, Thunder Bay (or “T-Bay,” as the cool kids call it… “Big Thunder” if you’re feeling especially rebellious) was filled with new kids on the block on Saturday.
The weekend, of course, began with a late-night party. Tween Fraserborg (2011) left P&H early at 01:12 to ensure she would make it back home to Rosyth, Great Britain, before curfew with product from the P&H elevator. Baby BBC Manilla (2022) was also outbound at 02:14 after a brisk unloading of wind turbine components at Keefer Terminal. A nearly 15-knot pace to the Soo would indicate that she has, in fact, already learned how to walk, though AIS indicates the saltie will be taking a quick nap at anchor near DeTour Village, MI. Manitoulin (2015, technically) was fashionably late to the rager at 02:52 to load at Richardson Main. Of note, her fake ID lists her birth year as 1991 under the alias Lalandia Swan.
Algoma Sault (2018) arrived at 08:59 after partying overnight somewhere else on Lake Superior. She would tie up for a load at P&H and remain there for the rest of the day. In typical teenage fashion, Evans Spirit (2007) slept in until 13:43 for an eventual arrival at Richardson Main, her first trip after receiving her driver’s license. Manitoulin shifted over to Richardson Current River to make room. In the late evening, other youngsters Algoma Conveyor (2019) and Oborishte (2010) departed Viterra B and A, respectively. The Conveyor (still in diapers) cleared for Hamilton, ON, at 16:46; Oborishte bid farewell at 19:16 for the Seaway. Shy Federal Champlain (2016) remained at MobileEx into the night.
Rich kid Viking Octantis (2021), refusing to take off her cool pilothouse shades even in the dark, strolled out of town just before 22:00 for McGarvey Shoal, ON. She is expected on the other end of the lake by the 30th but may be feeling some angst at the moment. Don’t worry — it’s just a phase.
The comparatively ancient Iryda (1999) spent her day scowling at the younger boats from the anchorage. Kids these days…
*Not counting Atlantic Huron (1984), in dry dock at Heddle Shipyards undergoing repairs.
Marquette, MI – Noah H.
Joyce L. VanEnkevort/Great Lakes Trader arrived on Friday evening at 17:32. They would also be the only traffic on Saturday with their 19:48 departure for Cleveland. Hon. James L. Oberstar is due next at the LS&I dock.
Drummond Island, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
A 00:01–03:58 stop in port capped off a two-part stone load for the venerable Wilfred Sykes. She’s currently on her way to Cleveland, OH, ready for a rematch with the Cuyahoga River after her last visit sent her to the shipyard.
St. Joseph – Benton Harbor, MI – Michael Moran
Samuel de Champlain/Innovation are in port discharging cement at Holcim. The pair will likely leave around 03:00 Sunday. Next boat scheduled is Undaunted/Pere Marquette 41, and I expect them Monday afternoon.
Holland, MI – Noah H.
Undaunted/Pere Marquette 41 made another visit on Saturday at 16:23 to load scrap metal at Padnos. They are the most frequent visitor to the newly reopened Holland port thus far.
Grand Haven, MI – Noah H.
Undaunted/Pere Marquette 41 arrived at 03:55 to unload at Verplank in Ferrysburg. They would depart at 14:20 for Holland in what would be a busy day for everyone’s favorite Interlake ship with a number in its name.
Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
Toledo, OH: Kaye E. Barker is at CSX. Mark W. Barker departed to C. Reiss in Saginaw.
Kingsville, ON: Cuyahoga is at Southwestern Sales Co.
Marblehead, OH: Herbert C. Jackson is loading stone at Holcim.
Sandusky, OH: Once loaded, CSL Niagara headed to Nanticoke. American Mariner arrived to load coal at Norfolk Southern.
Cleveland, OH: American Courage is back to run the shuttles.
Fairport Harbor, OH: American Courage unloaded stone at Osborne then departed to Cleveland. Fleetmate American Mariner arrived with her remaining stone cargo for Carmeuse, then left for Sandusky.
Ashtabula, OH: Calumet delivered stone from Port Inland to the Pinney dock.
Conneaut, OH: American Mariner delivered a partial stone load then left for Fairport Harbor.
Nanticoke, ON: Departures were Algosea to Tracy, PQ, while Kitikmeot W and Algocanada both left for Sarnia. Algoberta is loading at Imperial Oil and Algoma Transport is at Stelco.
Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
The American Courage unloaded stone in Erie, PA on the 26th. Geo. Grabel Co.’s tug John Francis was working a dredge job in the Barcelona, NY harbor with their dredge Crow and two dump scows.
The Defiance-Ashtabula arrived at 21:00 on the 27th for CSI on the City Ship Canal with a load of sand from Brevort.
