Thunder Bay, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Breaking a dry spell on the Canadian coast, Flevogracht arrived Big Thunder at 04:41 as the first vessel to make port in two days. The little saltie was loaded high with containers and proceeded to Keefer Terminal to offload a portion of her boxed cargo, joining the Antigua and Barbuda-flagged Eider at a nearby berth. The latter would technically depart at 13:31, only to reenter port to the south less than an hour later and proceed to Thunder Bay Terminals. Federal Biscay, departing for real at 14:12 for Montreal, QC, had recently cleared the dock. Another pseudo-departure would come courtesy of Andean at 17:03; the green saltie left MobilEx and headed up for Keefer Terminal a short time later. Flevogracht would eventually clear at 18:22 for Duluth, MN, with a portion of her containerized cargo still visible above deck.
Lubie once again spent the day at anchor.
Marquette, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
As a follow-up to yesterday’s post, the Joseph L. Block had been unloading sinter from Silver Bay, MN, at the ex-Shiras Dock. She has since shifted over to LS&I to load taconite pellets.
Port Huron, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
At 08:38 on Sunday, July 9, USCGC Hollyhock left her home of nearly 20 years to begin a new chapter in her life of service. Like the other 15 members of the 225-foot Juniper class, WLB-214 is due for a midlife refit in Curtis Bay, MD, a scheduled process known in Coast Guard lingo as midlife maintenance availability (MMA). Following necessary upgrades and repairs, Hollyhock is expected to be reassigned to the territory of Guam to finish her career. The identical USCGC Sequoia (WLB-215) will be headed to the lakes later this year to take over at U.S. Coast Guard Station Port Huron, similar to how USCGC Spar (WLB-206) replaced USCGC Alder (WLB-16) in Duluth, MN, last spring.
At least for now, however, Hollyhock’s stay on the Great Lakes has been slightly extended by the power outage on the Welland Canal. The cutter is in the midst of a long line of vessels waiting to transit following the onset of issues on Sunday evening.
Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
Toledo, OH: Arrivals were Evans Spirit to Midwest Terminals, Kaye E. Barker to Torco for coal and Albert/Margaret to George Gradel. Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader left for Detroit. Herbert C. Jackson remains dry docked at Ironhead Marine for stern tube bearing replacement.
Marblehead, OH: Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder loaded stone and left for Cleveland. Algoma Buffalo weighed anchor and moved to the dock. This is only the second visit for the Algoma boat.
Cleveland, OH: Algoma Buffalo left for Marblehead. Prentiss Brown/St. Marys Challenger unloaded at Columbus St. then departed to Charlevoix. Arthur M. Anderson arrived to unload UTAC pellets at the Bulk Terminal. She had to anchor to wait for American Courage to finish loading a shuttle. Tanker Selenka is unloading palm oil at the Port. Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder arrived with stone for Osborne.
Ashtabula, OH: John J. Boland arrived to unload a partial stone load from Calcite. She departed to Fairport Harbor to unload the remaining cargo at Osborne.
Conneaut, OH: Walter J. McCarthy Jr. departed for Two Harbors.
Nanticoke, ON: Algoterra and Algosea are loading at Imperial Oil. CSL Tadoussac arrived with ore for Stelco. She left for Superior, WI once empty.
